Redwood Vacation: How much ?? Here\'s the figures.

In many redwood related topics, countless folks posting that they want to visit the caost redwoods.

Sat down tonight and made a few calls to gather expenses for a hypothetical one person redwood vacation round trip. I picked Atlanta to Portland out of thin air just for a cross country example. Made a web page to write it and store the info one time.

Redwood Vacation Basic Cost by MDV

That page has the basic data in the table.

I've done a round trip flight search from Germany or the UK before, to either Portland or San Francisco. And they begin around $800 to $1000. So anyone overseas, add about $500 US to the final cost on the final total.

Would be nice to meet up with some of you folks down there some time. Beranek too.

Do you know about a small ex logging town in N. Cal. that has a restaurant that feeds you like they used to feed loggers 100yrs ago. Huge portions. That's what they say about me. Good man-hard on the grub. That could be the highlight for me.

The main one I know of is Camp 18 in Elsie Oregon.

Pretty cool place.

That's the first name that came to mind. CAMP 18, but it's in Oregon. Here's a couple of shots of that Camp 18. One of the old machines outside. And the upper room in the restaurant.

If there is a nice logger grub meal place in the redwoods, I'll bet that Gerry Beranek would know about it.

There is on seafood place with a meal or two that I almost can't finish though. The Chart Room in Crescent City near Jed Smith redwoods. The Fish & Chips dinner platter is one of the biggest meals I've ever ordered.

One other idea just came to mind ...

The old Lumberjack Inn at Orick, CA, was converted to a biker bar and restaurant. Orick is an old logging town, but wood carvings may be the biggest attraction. And the redwood park.

But the Lumberjack is now called Hawg Wild. And has the best food in that area. I just had the best platter of ribs ever, just last week. I eat there about once every trip down there.

Anyhow, I think its got the kind of food you are looking for.

Re: Redwood Vacation: How much ?? Here\'s the figures.

Probably Camp 18 is what I'm thinking of. We pulled off the I-5 or highway 1 in the dark, checked into a hotel in Cal or Oregon, asked the night clerk where to eat. He named a restaurant and said they'll fill you up with a grin. All the people leaving had 2 foot high stacks of styro doggy bags, seemed unusual. We sat down, the waitress put a large cast iron pot of stew down before we ordered. It would of been a meal in itself, then our order came. Holy huge pile of meat. We had leftovers for the next 2 days. It was a log building full of taxidermy, I wonder if we didn't stumble into the place I'm looking for already. I have no idea where we were though. Bottom line I'd love to come see and climb the redwoods someday.

Hey, boreality, you're probably thinking abut the Somoa Cook House across the bay from Eureka. And yes it was a logger's kitchen from way back when, and it's still all you can eat.

Great museum too. Be sure to include that in your trip to the redwoods.

The timing may fit. The figures I added up were for the Coast redwoods which are a lot closer to Portland.

But it sounds like you might be planning a loop.

Re: Redwood Vacation: How much ?? Here\'s the figures.

Mario,

No Loop We are going to dump our car in san fran and fly home. our goals are some short hikes in the groves along the coast.

Ger has taken me to the roosevelt and founders grove.I have no experience with the trees and terrain N of there to portland. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, I will be researching your extensive website, thanks for all your work on that . . . outstanding!

Need to start pinpointing some locations on google earth and then pick a route running south, approx 500 miles in 5 days should give our souls a much needed nature boost, I am psyched.

I'll be mapping it this wkend

Thanks again

One suggestion I often interject is that Crater Lake may not be worth visiting for 5 day itineraries. Its cool looking. But not cool enough for a drive that is out of the way.

The north Oregon Coast is very nice. But its a slower route. Since the southern Oregon coast is exceptionally nice between Gold Beach and Brookings, some folks prefer to go directly south on Interstate 5 to Grants Pass, head toward Crescent City on 199, but take a quick detour just before it on 197 to see Brookings to Gold Beach, Oregon. Then head south to Crescent City and northern California. There is also a decent spot to head east from Interstate 5 to the coast from near Roseburg or somewhere down there. But I think that the Smith River along Highway 199, makes 199 the best option. Awesome small canyon, and 5th cleanest river in the United States.

Caves are a real individual thing. But if you are into caves, Oregon Caves is about 19 miles south of Cave Junction, Oregon, along highway 199. That would take about 3 or 4 hours of time for drive and going in the cave. And one would want to call to check times and that its open.

Here's a glimpse of the Smith River along highway 199 on the way to Cresent City, Brookings OR and Jed Smith redwoods from Grants Pass. Actually, this river runs through Jed Smith redwoods.

Re: Redwood Vacation: How much ?? Here\'s the figures.

Here is the nature of scenery around Brookings to Gold Beach, barely 40 minutes from Jed Smith redwoods. (Oh, north CA coast is almost as pretty. Almost - LOL)

For me, if it came to choosing between the caves and Oregon coast, I'd say pick the Oregon coast section if you are not hell-bent on caves.

And for redwood stuff, don't invest time in redwoods at the Oregon park. Those are just jouvenile trees the biggest and the best begin with Jedediah Smith.

Re: Redwood Vacation: How much ?? Here\'s the figures.

Dave, the turnoff for the cookhouse is on the north side of town, Eureka. Signs are on the highway telling you where to turn.

Somoa is such a well known place that even if you didn't find the turn anybody could point the way. No worry.

Let me know when you'll be there and I'll try to hook up with you.

Thats an awesome offer Paul, I'd love to take Tom and my wife up (a tandem wraptor?) No plans to bring climbing gear, I'll be content to walk around em and bend my neck.

Can I have a raincheck on that offer? (maybe Austrailia 2011?)

Mario, Deb and I love caves, but the Oregon coast recommendation seems unmissable, So much to see and do and so little time. Want to drive 101 the 197 detour to Brookings, then So to Crescent city sounds like the ticket. Thanks for your experienced counsel With your help and gps this will be unforgettable.

Ger I'll see you in a couple weeks in Rochester, bring warm clothes were havin a good ole fashioned MN hard winter up here
