Redwood Trees & Forest

Just finished another visit to the redwoods a couple of weeks ago. Next visit planned in about 30 days. No way to keep up with Beranek though - he's got a huge head start.

Here's one in Jedediah Smith Redwoods in the interior hills. Somewhere in the 350' to 360' range. Man ... some of the best stuff is off the beaten path. Got some cool refreshing water from a stream and enjoyed some beef jerky soaking in the scenery.

In Redwood National Park, I drove about 16 miles along Bald Hills Road where it reaches highland prairies. About half way, found a wooded area of Douglas fir tree with this Calypso Orchid.

Prairie Creeks redwoods is the park I reserved a campsite for the last visit. Off the beaten path a bit, there was this giant salamander. I think it's called the Giant Pacific Salamander. Probably more common near streams from what I've read. This one was under a redwood tree in a moist shady area.

Very cool stuff! I will someday get to see those amazing trees

For a long time I had not seen them either - then one day I went, and it's now a favorite. I hiked earlier this year with a guy who flew from Germany. Now he is itching to visit again. Your first visit may just begin a string.

Here's an old truck I found near the ridge of Redwood National park. Small cab - but this truck had amazingly thick leaf springs. We could probably imagine how indusrious this vehicle was when logging occured up that way.

Anyone recognize the model ????

That must be C. Atkins with you, Mario. If you haven't visited Montgomery woods yet then you should put it on your list of groves to visit.

Yes - C. Atkins. Montgomery Woods will be on my to do list. I became interested to see it after reading through your chapters on A Tree Story. I squeezed in the drive to Rockefeller Forest last November. And it looks like Montgomery Woods is about 1.5 hours further south. Might need 2010 to check that one out.

The Roosevelt Elk look sort of cute in Spring time with the fuzzy antlers.

Early morning when I headed over to check out Fern Canyon, this one was moving around the trees near the beach.

Here's an interesting item ...

Not often that we see a 40,000 pound redwood burl. The 24 foot wide trunk sort of makes it looks small.

This is Sir Isaac Newton Tree. Van Pelt from Washington wrote that the burl is over 20 tons. And standing under it - I believe it.
