Red and Green tape

Something I thought I would share.
The biz that I work for has a med. amount of turn over on personel and this advice may help you keep everyone safe. It is mandantory that we mark all of our gear for easy ID.
All climbing gear and anything used for life support is marked with Green tape. All gear used for rigging is marked with Red tape. This Tape will make for easy ID of gear when a new person comes to a job site. This will leave no question as to whether the piece you pull out of your gear bag has been used for rigging, because it is marked accordingly. A rule of thumb also woud be to never mix the two. As always climb safe....

Freeclimber, just realize that tape can hide defects so make sure it is removed and the equipment is regularly inspected. Especially carabineers!

All climbing gear:

Alloy carabiners (when defective tossed away).
Climbing ropes (old ropes? tossed away).
Slings are all dyneemaa (old? tossed away).

All rigging gear:
Steel carabiners (when defective tossed away).
Rigging ropes, NOT OLD CLIMBING ROPES (tossed away when old)
Slings are not high modulus like the climbing gear.

Gear storage biners:
Ice clippers
When there is a slight chance that I could accidentally clip into it, like the one where I put my Chainsaw biner onto (very close to the left side D ring) Those biners are RED screw gate biners.

As you can see there can't be any accidental climbing/rigging gear swap. All gear has a specific rigging or climbing or storage purpose.

NEVER use old climbing gear for rigging. Not even an old climbing rope for 'light' rigging. If you do so than the 'rope for the light rigging' is to bulky.

how about condemned climbing carabiners that are still good for saw strops etc?

Why where they taken out of service. Because of a bad closing gate? And than you still want to be confronted with it?

Whatever turns you on mate, whatever turns you on. But don't bug us with your story about failing equipment

No serious, why would you use old bad material. If you take it out of service it's for a reason right?

umm, well, to give an example of every single carabiner used for this purpose, the gates are fine, but there are chips and dents in the carabiner's main frame.

Not safe for people, but plenty safe for saws, taglines, etc.

Damaged equipment should always be tossed, but all good gear should be marked accordingly, Green is good / red is rigging. I use it as a way to always keep the 2 dinstinguily different. Mainly for quick reference, you know at a glance.
