o a.m. or sitting on the computer all day.

What are you talking about Mike put the rain gear on and get to work! ha ha.Call me crazy but I like to do summer removals on wet days as long as its not to rigging intensive.Shrubs pines indoor wall climbing whatever.

i own some of the best rain gear i've found to date (marmmot, pre-cip). problem is, no one else does. besides my mom told me i could'nt get wet today.

o.k. so here it is,it's 3:00 and after a trip to american arborist, the used cd store, and a phone call to sherrill arborist supply i spent double what i could have made today.anybody else have that problem.
if i'm not making money, i'm spending money.

I know what you about not making money and spending money. If you went to AA today then I take it you don't live far from me. Ever check out the philadelphia rock climbing gym in Oaks? Today was a good day for me to catch up on some rest and recoupe. I got a nasty rope burn on Tuesday,Wednessday I kicked a dead branch in an attemp to knock it out of my way and had it come back and bite me so sometimes a day off is good and you never know when you might get another.

I guess it all depends on whats going on,if my co-workers are depending on a 40hr pay check and many of them do not get paid for rain days ,then Im there to help them get the day in if we can,I dont get paid for rain days but Im lucky enough that I can afford it some of the guys cant and if I dont work they dont work .Ive been on the other side so if we can get some work done we do.

I do work for the 50 houses on my street pretty regularly, I do it cheap enough to keep other tree trucks out of my neighborhood, and I also do it at my leisure (in most cases). They tend to call me for small prune jobs that they probaly would just ignore if I didn't live near them. The good thing is that at any point in time I've got a limb to take out for $50 or a tree to dead wood that no one is in a rush to get done. I do these small jobs in the rain, or when ever I need to just get out of the house. Working cheap for these 50 houses gets me lots of relatives and friends of the 50 who have been told how reasonable and honest I am that they just call me and I get the job without fighting other bids, and they do not get the neighbor discount.

We are fortunate enough not to have many rain days. I manage and train 8 crews. On rain days we have safety meeting and watch videos. Over the years I've noticed the guys really do not watch the videos or learn anything from them. This has always been a problem. So now I have prepared written tests on the videos and the best score will win a 3 hour bonus. Thier retention has improved dramaticly and we have had about 2 years of no lost time injuryies. Plus thier morale is better. Be safe!

Good thinking Todd, thats one way to get your crews to pay attention. I also like to throw in some pop quizes out in the field before they get started or towards the end of the day before quitting. Like to keep them on thier toes. Although your running a few more crews then me.
