Quickdraw McSaw

In a real work situation I carry my handsaw on my left and chainsaw on the right. For the upcoming TCC season I was trying to think of a way to mount my handsaw that was easy to get to, ergonomic, and out of the way. I was also trying to use the plastic saw scabbard that I normally can't stand in an effort to eliminate the over 1lb of weaver scabbard that I usually lug around.

What do you all think? I haven't tried this yet, and it might not get tested (by me) until the Charlotte TCC this coming weekend. Anybody forsee any problem points I'm not seeing?

I like it because it makes me feel like the High Plains Drifter!

And the saw/reel unit. I know other people use this type of reel setup. How do you like it.

Somebody please tell me how to post multiple pics!

You can't. Admin has it set to one attachment per post for some reason.

Why the string? Do you drop your saw a lot?

I've worn my handsaw on my left side for as long as I've been using a handsaw. In my opinion having the butt of the handle angling forward keeps it from hanging up as much in thick trees. And with the floppy Zubat scabbards I don't have to twist around and reach back as far when putting it away. I think if you climb with it like that for a week, you may just end up keeping it that way.

Dunno about that reel. I think it may get caught up in your lifeline crossing over like that. Why not put the reel next to the scabbard? Or leave it off?

Was a pleasure meeting you in Windermere last month Cory. Good luck in Charlotte.

Its specifically for climbing competitions, where you are disqualified for dropping an object from the tree. Although I haven't dropped a saw in a comp yet, I figure its cheap insurance.

I haven't tried this in a tree yet, so I'm not sure how it will interact with my ropes. It may turn out to be a terrible spot to mount a saw. I should probably find out before the 18th!

Rocky, It was good meeting you too. Always nice to actually meet the real person behind all the posts. Especially if they can walk the talk! I remember being thoroughly impressed with your Work Climb performance!

If you drop your saw or anything for that matter during a
competition event, it is an automatic disqualification. I once thought I would never drop a saw...I was wrong

That is how I've always done it as well. I'm right handed, but prefer the handsaw on the left side.

This idea is just for competitions. Not really a "working" idea.

I put the reel on the right, because I'm right handed and the whole thing seemed to work a bit better that way.

THATS good to know! But I will definitely know before the 18th then won't I?

I like the idea but I see flaws in it. I know it's comp and you don't have teeth on the saw but the judges may look at that as unsafe during work practice and you may actually lose the bonus points. As you would be pulling the saw out of the scabbard you could knick your lifelines in a real work situation.

I guess I'm not familiar with the rulz of competition climbing.

Plz stop hitting me on my headz...

MB,
It's cool don't worry I had no clue till last year but here's a lil fyi masterblaster. All saws have to either be ground off or taped over. The also have length requirments that it has to be under. The reason for this is to avoid people from cutting the bells out of the tree while climbing.
