quick connect dog bone for HH

I've been using the hh for about 5 months now and love it. my only problem is that when reattaching it to a line, sometimes a different line, that it usually takes a while before I can get the hitch cord to the desired length. I currently have a machinist friend working on a dog bone that incorporates a slick pin into one end of the dog bone. so after you have a cord and stop knots set at the desired length all you have to do is release the slick pin and take it out, without untying the stop knot. Has anyone dabbled with this idea before and what were the findings. I hope to have a picture upon completion in about a week.

I can't site the source (because I don't remember), but I have hear of a slic pin on a rope wrench that disengaged accidentally. Which wasn't a big deal with the wrench. I'd be careful.

would seem easier and safer to simply stitch a mark on your hitch cord to give a positive indication as to where the knot goes.

I've heard of slick pins with a double lock, instead of the single lock that is on the rr. If I like what I find with my new bone I would def look into the double locking pin.

My guy finished the prototype dog bone today. It looked much better than I thought it would. Said he made it out of a grade 5 bolt, which he said was harder and stronger than the original. I'm a little hesitant to test it high in the air. I'll be keeping it very low for now. My initial thought along with some of you was that if the pin released you'd come crashing down. Well because you actually have to release the pin twice to allow enough room for your hitch cord to pass through the opening I'd say the odds of that are slim...very slim. I would like to know how you get something like this tested? Is there anyone except me that thinks this would be a useful tool? And just your general thoughts and comments.

Pm me your address and I can send you a quadruple action slic pin. Seems like it could make for a quick easy attachment.

I very much doubt a grade 5 bolt is harder than the dog bone since it is made of 4140 pre hardened steel but Im sure it will be sufficient. Cannt wait to see the pictures.

Aaron. Upload them to photobucket.com, after you create an account. Then go to your photo library in photo bucket and hover over the little gear, then click get links, then copy the direct link. then go back to where the forum u wish in treebuzz (in the box ur typing in), below the box is another box with options, click image, then paste the direct link, then click continue (it will still appear as the link you pasted and not a picture, thats okay. Then just click okay submit. Took me forever to figure this out.

Kevin- is the slick pins used to assemble the rope runner the quadruple locking variety?

Yes. Quad acting

Your friend did a great job. Looks awesome!! But freaky too... I think I'd find it too distracting as I'd constantly be checking the pin. You mention you have to release the pin twice, that does make it sound more reassuring. Would be good if some test were run.
Super idea, I wonder what refining will come from this...

I would definitely get the double pin for that. I like the idea a lot though. You can key hole one side so it comes completely out one side. Meaning you have to put it through the same side every time. I have a boat load of these double lockers. Slic pins are stronger than carabiners. Pulling directly against the lock is rated at 600 lbs +. They are used frequently in the aviation industry and are rated. With one lock though it is sketch because like in carabiners a strand of rope can get ensnared in the lock or grime and disable the lock. It has happened on rope wrenches. Two lock mediates that. I want to eliminate carabiners in a lt of applications and use slic pins.
