In lots of my pruning, I get frustrated with the HO's when it comes to some of the work. If its hanging into the street, neighbors yard, lines, etc. "No, I don't want pay for that! Let the other people deal with it." - so getting the tree looking great and then leaving the other low hangers in the neighbors yard or in the lines or on the neighbors house when its the HO/ customer that is paying is really hard for me. Normally the neighbors will argue while I'm there. If I offer for free, then that creates another issue altogether. If I "include it in the price" again, it creates that negotiation room they want since they feel it is something they don't want pay for. Some clients, no matter what science or experience or knowledge you support it with, they simply won't bend their thought process. As a person making money in this industry, when someone else sees what was done, I want them to see my best at every turn. Makes it hard with someone bartering over every leaf. I have definitely turned down clients where the pruning would look horrible after the work was done. Sure enough though, weeks later when I revisit some them. Someone did the work.
Drives me nuts this one job I did 3 months ago. Guys yard and houses done pristine. Fully manicured, pond, tons off species of trees. I trimmed up the whole yard and 4 towering oaks and it looked great. HOWEVER, if it hung over his fence line, "It's their problem, they can pay for it" it was a few $k contract and I assumed that as I was cleaning out and moving from tree to tree he would come to his senses. NO. Ended up talking to the neighbors and no one wanted pay for someone else tree obviously. So I made a "deal" with one of them, they give me a $1 so we could honestly say that they "paid me" and to never tell the neighbor who's trees I was cutting the price point we agreed to. Still he refused to let me cut the stuff hanging through the branches hanging into the alley going through the lower telephone and cable lines. I drive by that house frequently and know I haven't generated any referrals from it.
