In my opinion YES. It’s going to create a pressure point, killing the cambium, also lateral loads or torsion can cause it to slip off. In the apple tree prop photos the trunk is captured by 4 all thread bolts sanded into a domed radius. It was dry fit and the contact points marked. The bark was trimmed off to solid wood then reinstalled and snugged up but not driven into the wood.Would there be any benefit to utilizing the threads to secure the rod to the wood itself?
It’s hard to see but there was a saddle cut and welding to capture a limb for vertical support.
My goal was to create a prop that will get stronger in time as wound wood callus over the bolts and the saddle will be less of structural element.
