Pretensioning with GRCS

I find that work has been alot more productive and elegant with this piece of hardware. It goes on the truck when I got big trims and removals. To anyone that does not have one, Try one, then you'll get one.

It's a neat toy, for sure, but I wouldn't pay $2500 for it.

Wow! Really how come? Do you do alot of removals?

Almost exclusively, Ricky.

It's worth the price, as is a tool like the Wraptor.

I'm confused?!

I borrowed one for a job once, and I ended up buying one the next week.

There's nothing like watching wood go up rather than down.

thats what my old lady says!

can you tell me what a wraptor is, i don't get to read everything on the forum and i haven't seen that word before.

thanks,

The wraptor is a motorized ascender in the works by Paul Cox from Virginia. During a GTG it brought me, a 160lb climber, 150' feet in 90 seconds flat.

Paul can be found on the treehouse forum under PCTREE.

Two days ago I did a Hybrid Cottonwood removal in a back yard. Back yard, overhanging trees, structures, fences, concrete, tight access, etc... (you know the routine)

Last pick of the day was this 53' leader. I limbed most of it on the way up to set the line. I cut a wide open notch to assure the leader would go to a vertical point and not drop unexpectedly. Stood it up, cut it free, then lowered it. When the but end came close to the ground I was able to pull it off to the desired direction between the home and fence. Then I brought in the Boxer to pull it back while the GRCS handled the rest.

The cell phone photo was only taken from the perspective of the Boxer's position between the home and fence. I didn't think of a side shot. That would have been clearer to depict the size of the leader.

But, I assure you, the measuring tape was not incorrect.

BTW. We have the chuck for the GRCS to use a corded drill. A luxury for the groundsman and security of cranking faster when getting larger leaders up.

A Hobbs can't do that.

Ut-Oh! I may derail this to be a Hobbs vs. GRCS thread.

here's your Wraptor pretty much a POC compared to some of the others out on the market.

I can be lifted into the tree with a GRCS and a corded drill just as fast. Of course, this is after I have established a TIP and block when rigging for a removal. I only use the GRCS to ascend with my climb line in place. Basically, I simply have to tend slack while I'm being pulled up.

You know how it is; If you have the opportunity to take a break (because you are close to the ground) you may as well take a break. So, this method makes it easy to get back up there.

But, I don't think the Wraptor is a POC either.

I didn't know you tryed one and held it in your hands. I wont sit here and defend a product, as a person who used one and know of a dozen others who have, my order is placed as soon as they come out. I'll wave while your body thrusting.

By the time you set your grcs up on the tree, with a block up top, I'd be already sending down the wraptor and off to work. But like a GRCS, a Wraptor is one of those tools you have to use to appreciate. The same way I didnt want to buy a GRCS in the beginning, after I tryed it I had to have one.

I'm done on the wraptor, we'll let Hollin--- kill the rest of the thread.

Brendon. I'm saying, it would be useful to ascend after taking a break on the ground. ---By defalt, everything would already be set up.

I thought I was clear, that it would'nt be primarily used just to ascend to the top.
