Poplars with problems

Hi Guys,

This is my second season dealing with these trees. Last season I did a big prune job and took out heavily infect branches and a meticulous clean up job.

Well some trees have come back unaffected and others totally covered in various fungus/galls/bugs. My next thought is a hort oil program this winter and ongoing. This is something I've talk with the HO about.

I don't deal with hort oils or fungicides ect. Any help would be great. I'll attach some pics. I don't want to do anything till I know what I've got.

Thanks for any help.

The greenish yellow leaf afflictions are galls, very possibly Eriophyid galls which are mites. The last gall is familiar and I can't quite place it - Cecidomyid fly maybe. None of these galls are harmful and to my knowledge cannot be treated chemically anyway.

Eriophyid mites. Super common here, on lindens in particular. A dormant spray will offer some control but i never recommend it because the mites have little effect on tree vigour.

Why am i surprised that i didn't beat you to this response Frax?

Thanks Guys,

As well I found serpentine leaf miner on one of the trees. Did you guys have any suggested course of action for the galls/mites.

Just to promote good general tree health. Watering when needed, nutrients, mulch etc, soil care. The healthier a tree is the better it deals with the little annoyances. Just like people.
If they are huge poplars they probably don't need our puny help.

What she said.

What they said, plus:

Put up birdhouses and bathouses and birdfeeders.

Sometimes overpruning stresses trees.

"Thanks for the suggestions Guys,"

i get confused when we are referred to as "guys" when one is a girl and one is Guy. Weird.

"guys" is OK for girls. As well as guys and gals named Guy. (which is pronounded Gee - with a hard G in the french) Thats' how I talk. Weirded the girls and guys out in England when I lived there for a couple of years as a teenager.

They also thought talking about "pants" was weird, since over there pants are men's underwear. So..."chainsaw pants" must conjure up some kind of kinky thing in a Brit's mind.

And eraser was a "rubber" to them which to me was a condom. THAT weirded me out when asked for one at school one day.

TOTAL DERAIL!!!

And ghee in India is clarified butter...

so frax how old were you when asked for a rubber? was it the teacher who asked? what was he wearing at the time? were there unusual aspects to his behavior? and how did that make you feel? this is like hannibal lecter inquisiting clarice starling; better quit. let me know if those lambs stop bleating....

and those sharply raised leaf galls are sometimes called "nipple galls" here; wonder what they call them in Singapore? Not that, for sure, they speak a proper kind of British, with Asian reserve.

I get to spend 5 days at their bot gdn after ISA conference; tree pics from there will be fun ID fodder for you canuckians fo sho. train just fell off tracks!

Sorry to mess with your fantasy Guy,

but I was 16 and it was a fellow student. And it was an all girls English grammar school. That either kills the fantasy or creates a new one!
