I hear ya, Jimmy. I only use a pole if I don't feel safe climbing to the cut. Mostly that means pecan reductions, though I recently pruned a Spanish oak where I heard cracks from two different tie-ins (badly sunscalded after line clearance). I used a pole.
I never tried to forbid a climber from using a pole; I just show them I can do without. But I think you are not always on site with the crew, so I can see where you might go that route. Old timers (and old is relative) tend to get lazy, and if you're out on a a sales call they can get away with it.
I've said it before: I used to climb with a pole most of the time, and I genuinely tried to make every cut perfect, and I made quite a few lousy cuts. Pole saws should be a last resort.
