Pole Saw Blades

Has anyone had any problems with pole saw blades breaking? I have had 3 Blades that I bought from Sherrill that have all broke before the lettering has even worn off yet. I am very carefull not to bend the blade while in a cut. Wussup with that!

Kevin, the hook tip blade is the one that I have had problems with. I talked to the folks at Sherrill and they said that I wasn't the only one with this problem. As to why it is happening they didn't have a clue.

I quit buying mine from Sherril three years or more ago, and suggested that they switch suppliers. I get mine from Bishop cheaper, for under $14, I think they are Fannos? They are much better. I only use the hooked ones, wouldn't be without that fabulous puller!! Lots of companies out here dont use them, they dont know what they are missing!! Specially for cleaning/pruning duff out of doug fir, the hook rules.

i had problems with the Sherrill blades years ago. The problem i sighted out was an extra hole in the blade weakening it just as it leaves the bracing of the head.

When mine broke they left a piece on the head about the size of a silver dollar. i took this piece and took the sharp edge where it broke off; then used it to overlay that portion of the new blade like a giant washer. i set it so it would pinch and brace the new blade against the head; i think it adds bracing; and they last longer; though doesn't totally eliminate the problem.

Now, we just buy Corona replacement tri-cut blades at HD; but we still brace it with the piece from one of the old broken blades, because it has become part of the system it worked so well.

i think just as speed trades off with power at any given level; so in tempering -flexability tends to trade off with strength.

We're your friends, so give us good information, OK? As far as product description goes, be specific, please. It helps to state the make, model & size of blade (or whatever product is being discussed). And, say it in a positive, uplifting way. I find myself dismissing or skimming thru posts that aren't researched well, or have a tone of disapproval.

Most of these retailers sell a dozen or more types of saw blades. The different supply houses sell exactly the same product as each other, much of the time. ARS licenses it's tooth design to a few different blade-makers, who all have their own quality control issues.

So, why say, "so and so's blades are no good"? The supplier has very little control over what the manufacturer puts in the package. Loyalty comes down to customer service, a lot of the time.

Some new models of throwlines kink too easily, accidently get knots that cannot be undone, fray easily & break, or need too much breaking in to stow properly when new. I saw a 300' spool that had no markings on it to identify the manufacturer. Maybe the person who bought it knows it's name, but I wish I knew the brand & model, because then more money wouldn't be wasted on this unsuitable product.

Next years catalogs will not include certain new items from this year's offerings that didn't catch on. Too bad we're the guinea pigs in some of the product development games being played.

Speaking for my own post, i was thinking we were on same page with a kinda generic/import polesaw blade from Sherrill that is of standard Snap-Cut mounting, with an extra hole that lines up as a weakspot, as it sits right on the end of the head/holder going to the blade.

It seems to me the blade wants to flex at that point, and the hole weakens the integrity by being right on the enhd of the blade bracing that it gives.
