PMI Ropes

Hey folks,

What can you tell me about PMI ropes?

It seems that none of the main arborist suppliers carry their products.

But, the On Rope1 store, which is local for me
smile.gif
mostly carries their stuff.

I'm thinking about getting some of their static rope to use as for a lanyard and/or rope bridge.

Thanks for any suggestions.
 
I have PMI EZ Bend 11mm as my lanyard right now. I a using it with a Grigri and it works great. My partner is using it with the 5mm Maxim tech cord and he likes it as well. I really like how stiff it is so it flips easily. The only down side in my opinion is that it doesnt daisy chain nicely. My lanyard is 30ft or so and it is kind of bulky compared to my last lanyard which was KMIII. PMI EZ Bend is way way stiffer than KMIII, Samsons static kernmantle, or the Bluewater static line, which are the only other static lines that I have used. Personally I really liked the EZ Bend as an ascent line also.
 
Todd Kramer told me that he is using a Dynamic rope for his lanyard and really likes it. I forget what all the reasons he liked the dynamic over static but that also is really stiff and would flip well.

I use the PMI classic sport that treestuff.com sells. Its great for an ascent line. I did a little video review of it.

Only downside is that its white and gets dirty fast.

I really like that PMI is made in the USA.
 
At that time I was using a Cinch as an adjuster. Trango's info sheet said to only use with dynamic rope. I did notice a bennefit when on a spar. The rope absorbed some energy of sitting into the lanyard instead of your body absorbing the energy.
 
PMI rope in general is stiffer than other brands of static I've used, which may or may not be a good thing depending on what you're going to use it for. For a flipline, I imagine it would be better, but for ascent I've been using the HTP. Much softer hand and less stretch to boot. Love that rope.
 
Thanks Todd. Seems like dynamic would be better, just for the give factor. Hopefully the rope would take any unwanted or unexpected force instead of your body. Static would work just the opposite.

Granted i've only owned 2 static lines. But i've climbed on a couple others. I thought the the PMI Classic Sport was less stiff then New Englands Static-Pro (my other line) Also i have climbed on HTP and KMIII. I found it less stiff then both of these in my limited experience. It has very close +- .1% elongation of the HTP and less then the KMIII

HTP elongation 1.7% at 300lbs
Classic Sport 1.6& at 300lbs
KMIII 2.9% at 300lbs

Everyone will find what works for them. No one rope is going to be the "best" rope.

True. The local outdoors store here sells PMI and Bluewater, mostly rated under 5K tensile strength. All of the biners they carry are either key lock or non-locking.

However, it probably serves us well to look at what the rock&rescue folks are doing for new ideas and applications for our work. Lots of the folks that have gotten us to where we are in terms of gear and techniques did just that...

Oh for sure! Now if i can figure a way to use my cams for tree work I'll be set.
