Phannerman "The Fails"

Great vid. watched it five times! The music is a perfect fit. check out the tree flex when the top comes over!!

Man, this make me feel better. Lol. I've had a few of these, but never wanted to put them in a video, fear of the hammer of criticism coming down for making a mistake. Nobody or anything ever hurt or damaged, but they can still up the pucker factor.

While everyone makes mistakes, no one is really going to give Lawrence a hard time... At least no one that saw those city trees he was taking down through mazes of wires. That looked like a nightmare ...

I don't care for tip tying unless absolutely needed.. some do it as standard MO.. that can land wood in your lap... down and away is the goal...

One thing I learned from by slowing this video down is that the real springboard effect in lowering a big top off itself is caused by the top slapping back against the trunk.... letting it run may reduce the impact slightly, but more importantly is puts the impact lower on the trunk. The lower the impact, the less the bounce....

I always thought there must be a lot of trial and error involved to get good at rigging huge pieces like pfman. Low and behold, the fails!
I loved the bookends, the super tough top push that finally lets go.
I hope I come off as stylish when I work...

Watching that top flex so close to the point of near failure makes me think it maybe a good idea to install some rigging rings along the spar in certain situations. Especially when using a new groundie or the possibility of the top catching on another tree. Good to see the post!

I filmed that bit at 1.16 on a clearance job in San Fran.
the groundsman thought he heard that Law had set a block up as the rigging point for that top.
Law had actually set a safe bloc.
a slight mis-communication meant there was not the needed work rope spooled out by the rope man,
he was very embarrassed and apologetic about the incident.
in all fairness there was a 20ton excavator , a bobcat , a 20" chipper and a bunch of saws all running at the same time.

That is one thing good about my small business. I will have everyone shut off the equipment for a minute to make sure we’re on the same page. I know this may not always be possible having big crews/multiple crews working. I have texted and/or slash called my Bobcat guy before while in the tree. I would love to have SENA headsets but I couldn’t wear them come summer. Glad everything turned out ok! Video was awesome

I think for safety sake, how can you not wear the Sena? I've used the 10r's for about a year now and we can't stand to be without them, just do much safer and smoother. Better than yelling. If it's the " the muffs are hot on my ears" thing, that's kind of a poor excuse for safety, along the lines of chaos are hot and uncomfortable so I don't wear them. I'm not saying that's the case, or calling you out, just pointing out that advancements have been made to improve safety/ communication, why not use them.
