Petzl Treesbee

Basically say that things a piece of crap considering it seems to be set up so that little ring will fit nicely through the big ring, which I HATE in a RING/ring friction saver.

Why bother? By a decent one, or make your own. Either will be superior to petzl's.

The quoted 15kn is half load(inline strength)so when configured is double.
I agree with Nick though its not the best friction saver.

I don't know exactly how long Petzl has been making the item in question but it's been in their catalog for at least a few years that I'm aware of.

Petzl is a French company. Is the patent on the "Friction Saver" granted there?

Yeah I don't think I'd ever buy one, I just saw it and thought it was interesting. My homemade one is a lot better anyways.

Using the "quick" patent search (uspto.gov) with "friction" in all fields and "buckingham" in "assignee" field yields only Wood pole fall protection device (issued June 22, 2004). Perhaps the patentee is someone else and/or the patent is for a different specific configuration, such as one large ring and one small ring, which would be different than what Petzl is offering.

The U.S. Patent Office currently issues patents in a bone-headed manner for things with either demonstrable prior art or severe obviousness. If there is in fact a patent on a friction saver and it's broad enough, those of us who make our own without license could be in legal trouble.

ArborMaster® Friction Savers (Patented)

They don't have a trademark on the term "friction saver" but it looks like they've got a two-ringed false crotch with webbing strap covered by a U.S. Patent. I think that's why New Tribe stopped selling their version. Nothing wrong with making them, just can't sell them, at least not publicly.

Okay, this must be it ("arborist" is highlighted because it was the search term). A patent by Ken Palmer. If what you're making has a ring on each end and the one ring cannot pass through the other ring (and what's between them is webbing?) and the rings are different sizes, then it doesn't matter if you're making them to sell or to just use yourself. The very making of them is protected by the patent. The safest bet would be to contact Ken (or whomever owns the patent now) and seek permission.
