Pesticide Spill Story

Banner Sales posted this story in a recent email newsletter. I’ve always thought this is one major advantage to using kioritz style soil injectors and trunk injection equipment as opposed to driving around with hundreds of gallons of pesticide or fertilizer.

Truck Safety Tip

A story about a PHC company that avoided a catastrophe

A client had an accident where a driver had slammed into the back of their spray truck causing a fitting to break right at the tank leaving no way to stop the pesticide leak. Emergency services notified the EPA which would have normally responded but they had to choose between another accident that was more pressing. Lucky for this client, they did not incur a fine and clean up protocols that would have totaled over $25,000 even though the wrecker service had stopped the leak before reaching drains. The wrecker service charged $7,000 for their efforts that had to be paid while the crew was on site. What's most important to know here is that same wrecker driver gave great advice. He suggested purchasing toilet donuts for every truck as a part of their spill kit resource for events like this. Wax toilet rings do a great job of sealing leaks until the tank can get drained preventing major spill containment costs.

Good to know. I'll be getting wax rings now.

I went a long time without a spill kit...just never occurred to me. They are pretty cheap and don't take up much room so I have one in the truck at all times now.

Was ring is simple enough to add to that.

I had a Kiriotz for a while and never used it. I brought it back out about 3-4 years ago and have a new appreciation for it! So much so I bought Grand Arbor Supply's 1-Two soil injector - carries more volume so less frequent refills. However I still have more confidence in the Rittenhouse soil injector with flow meter. The other two seem inconsistent in how much they actually pump out (based on how much I have left after counting number of pumps knowing how much I started with).

As I'm at the store buying a wax ring..."wonder how much this thing will melt in 120° truck middle of the summer?"

It's in an unsealed cardboard box. I'll store it in a Ziploc bag!
Yeah, I didn’t think about that. Might end up a mess.
