They emerged today around these parts - East Tennessee/North Georgia. Just giving a heads up FWIW.

I believe it's the 13 year species - red eyes, black bodies, holes all over the ground where they crawled out.

I pruned a red maple yesterday - great day, great climb.

Came back to it today and it was absolutely covered in the little buggers. Woulda been gross climbing with all those things falling into my shirt and whatnot.

they have been making a major racket here for going on a month. the trees should look interesting next spring, with all the ovipositioning they do in the twigs.
 
They were in Asheville a couple years ago. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. So flipping annoying. The noise, them landing on your neck,etc.... But the do make for good time throwing them on co workers necks!

They actually had pretty severe effects on a lot of big oaks that had been in several years of bad drought. It ended up being the last straw and killed a lot of them.
