Pantin and spikes

I saw a pic of spikes with the Pantin over the top of them. I have feet large enough that I cant use my Pantin over my spikes, so my question is can you mod a pantin to work with spikes? I would like to attach the pantin without cutting or even removing the webbing that comes on the pantin. Is this possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree.

The reason for using the pantin would be to cut out a dead top, where spikes are required, but not to damage the living part of the tree.

Well what you can do is strap a spike to your belt and go up the tree using the pantin and then strap your one spike on when you get into the tree.

could you climb up your normal method (pantin, footlock, body thrust etc...) then have your groundie send up the spikes, throw em on.... and then take off when you're down to living tissue...

What if you used a regular ascender with a foot loop instead of the Pantin? That way you could wear the spikes and when you're ready, step out of the foot loop and kick in. You'd have to tend your slack by hand for a ways until the weight of the rope started doing it, bu otherwise it should work like normal.

Use the pantin and a sling girthed to the tree to support your other foot where there isn't a branch to stand on.

I think Kevin has a pretty good idea...here is what I did recently...didn't have any problem getting the Pantin over the spike...didn't take any modification at all.

That is the pict that I saw. My foot it too big to do that, so I was thinking of how I could get the same effect. Another situation where it would come in handy would be a removal with two large leaders splitting off low to the ground. When the leaders split off, it is sometimes hard to throw your laynard over that split.

I know all the tricks of putting you spikes on after you start climbing, but that is such a pain in the bumb. I was really hoping there was some trick to attach the pantin to the spike...but maybe not.

Depends how you have the pantin set up. The way I use mine, it always goes on at the beginning of the day. If I need spikes, I put them on over the top - no problem. Done it often e.g. Big tree to climb and rig- ascend SRT Frog with pantin, pull up spikes when required.

Don't recommend Frogging with spikes on - done it a couple of times, and gaffed my c/saw trousers a couple of times

I found that with my summer boots on, pantin works over spikes. With my winter boots on, I still cant use the two together.

Just a thought here. Maybe you could rig up something say a snap welded onto your pantin and on the spike or otherwise fastened so could use the pantin to footlock up the rope and then work with your spikes without have to worry about it coming off or you could just unsnap the thing and put it a bag or toss it down to a groundy. The only bad part would be putting it back on the webbing and using it without the spikes it might push into your foot unless you had two of them and one was a permanent fixture on your spikes or used the snap idea so in case you needed to just use spikes for removal it wouldn't get in the way.

Have you thought of modifying the foot strap on the panteen to accomidate your large feet? Its not life support so anything is possible.

I have thought about this, however I dont want to ruin what I know works. I am afraid that if I cut the webbing, whatever I replace it with wont work as well.
