Palm tree fire

Only a few things that would scare me coming up the tree. ^ That, and, This: ...
I worked with a guy who was in his deer stand when a mountain lion was circling the bottom of the tree. He was able to call into the guide's office. Game warden happened to be there when he called. They told him
"Throw something at it".
"I've thrown everything I can!"
"Make loud noises"
"I have been"
"just keep that up...it will go away. You can't shoot it"
"It's front paws are on the tree"
"Yell at it"
"It's coming up the tree now!!!"
"Shoot it!" click

Put an arrow through its eye, it ran down and up another tree and was still alive when the game warden showed up to put it down.

As scary as that is...probably less so than the fire! At least he had some measure of control/ability to respond. Once that fire started, he was stuck at the mercy of what was going to happen - not much to do from up there.

Bears 'n Trees - reminds me of a very old Texco Canada newsletter where a bear chased two geologists up separate trees, then went after one of them while the other took pictures from up in his tree. In the end I think it lost interest after a couple of swift boot kicks but it was audacious that the black bear would try it. The caption was something like "Downstream staff don't really appreciate the lengths that Resources has to go to to find oil and gas . . . " Blacks are really good climbers - so are grizzlies too, contrary to what most people think. I've seen video where a fully grown grizzly almost runs up a vertical tree for a meal.

Not much to do?

Like hell!

I'll bet he put as much slack in that lanyard he could, and literally flew down that birthday candle like a pole climbin champion!

That's what I'd've done!

I've been buzzin Queen palms here with the new lectric trimsaws, 8 palms per battery, not bad, and thermally speaking, very cool.

Thought your climbing pants were a kilt before I realized your saddle us just hung on a chair. If that wouldn't be the biggest disincentive for a groundman to look up I don't know what is.

One of the funniest sights I've ever seen was from the top of a tall date palm in Santa Barbara.

I was buzzin away and dislodged a big rat, that hit the ground n bounced n ran. My oldest brother started chasin the rat around with an XL925 Homelite with a 3 foot bar! He even made contact with the rat a few times, but the rat'd leap way off the ground each time, and finally escaped to bounce another day. But it was a long drawn out 5 minute battle, and I about gaffed out up top laughin so hard!
