Osprey nest

Tom,

The other morning I drove by the reservoir on my way to work and wouldn't you know it, there he was. One of the bald eagles was close to the road. The nest is half way across the water from the road so I never really get a close up. My camera isn't that great for zoom shots, but here it is. I am leaving it a high-res file because it wasn't close/clear enough otherwise.

What's the deal? Can't osprey make their own nests?

In some areas of the U.S. there's a shortage of the kind of trees they like (dead standing)or live trees with sturdy open branch structure at the top of the tree. They make their own nests with a pile of sticks but need a good platform to start on. So it realy doesn't matter what the platform is made of, just as long as it's sturdy and in the right location. That's a tough call since it's hard to know exactly how an Osprey thinks. They may know things you don't know. For instance if there is a Great Horned Owl living in the area the Osprey might not nest. If it does the owl will feast on the chicks.
