One that has been dead for a while.

This one was dead for a while before I noticed it. All of the upper branches had already fallen. Only about 3 branches left, so I could use branching or leaves for ID. Based on the photos, what are your guesses? SE Wisconsin, low, wet area. Mostly green ash (dead), box elder, buckthorn, Norway maple and spruce trees around it.

Thanks. We don't get many that grow that large before getting nailed by Dutch Elm Disease. Elm makes lousy lumber, correct? Warps easily?

And even nice sharp gaffs only penetrate maybe a half inch. Very hard wood when dead. Stays pretty strong for a while too.

Very splitting resistant with the alternating grain.

Historically it was used for wooden wheel hubs.

Using Elm for cutting boards?

As the only woodworker in my family I’ve been asked to make another batch of cutting boards. Last batch I did was made of 2” sugar maple cubes, end grain facing up. These worked well, but I can’t train my family NOT to put the boards on the dishwasher..... A friend has a stash of seasoned...
