old school device is new to me

I 've come across an older ratcheting lowering device that I believe to be referred to as a first generation generic Hobbs(no label). I'm generally a pruning specialist but needed something for the occasional takedown. Obviously I should buy the newer design or GRCS whenever I become wealthy but for now would like to explore the lifting potential of this forefather of a device. I have plenty of experience using the fixed bollard model but would like any useful advice on using the ratchet. Even with two people it is difficult to keep the wraps tended... especially pertaining to wraps jamming into the very inside ring within the inner pins. Thanks for any input. Any chance that there is an instruction booklet that came with these things?

We have an old Hobbs LD. It was made in 1988. It is very important to have the spool level to prevent the rope from overlapping. If neccessary, shim or face cut the tree. As the spool is lifting, keep an eye on the rope to make sure it doesn't overlap. When lowering, stay directly in front of or behind the spool to prevent overlapping.

Like anything in life it reaches a point where it is out with the old and in with the new. The new Hobb's H-2 has eliminated the overlap problem altogether. For the investment you can't beat a Hobb's Lowering and lifting device. The time you waste trying to figure out a way to prevent rope overlap is all the time you need to justify the expenditure of a new device.
