Old school climber

How are you climbing right now? Blakes hitch, spurs and flipline? What kind of saddle do you use? A saddle with a rope bridge really helps with the newer climbing techniques.
The first thing I would tell you is to get a hitchclimber pulley and some heat resistant hitch cord. A foot ascender could be a good investment as well, even when only climbing DdRT. I would like some more infos on what your systems are though. Do you use a throwline?

Oh noy 36 and old school. You are young and living in great times. The arb industry is in it's finest hour gear wise. Get used to climbing on rope and no spikes. Those leg irons are for removals only. Now use some form of friction saver to allow rope easy movement with little or no friction. This is a pic of the modern climber. My son Sam is 7.

I'm climbed for years doing right of way work. Now im doing residential work. Looking for ideas to take my old school ways and use the new tools to make it a little easier. An ideas let me know
55 yrs old here and have been climbing since 14. As of a few years ago I was still climbing in an old leather floating dee leg strap saddle, rocking a taught line hitch, and slinging a 7/8" manilla flip-line with a bechets hitch. Doesn't get much more old-school. I live and work in tall timber and my ascents can be as much as 200 ft, so spurring and rolling a flip-line up big sticks for so long was really starting to takes it toll on my body. Enter a kickass rope walker setup, a killer SRT hybrid device (Wrench, HH2, BDB, Akimbo, etc.), and a good line launcher and my life has officially been changed. Spurring up big wood during my initial assent is now a last resort. Fuck that!.

As you already have a handle on DdRT I would suggest you jump right into SRT and get a Rope Wrench setup, a rope walker setup (Mini-Saka & foot ascender), and a good line launcher ( APTA). These 3 tools alone could keep you busy progressing as a climber for quite a long time. Do not be intimidated by the whole SRT thing as it is very simply shit that will forever change the way you approach tree work.

As far as a new saddle goes I would humbly suggest a TreeMotion S.light. Simply put it is one of the most kickass comfy saddles in the world and no other comes near it at its price point.

Sam is the man!!! That is so cool! I have and continue to try and get my Grandson interested in climbing but he really could care less!!

If it’s the Camp saddle I’m thinking of, the Tree Access Evo, it’s pretty new school, and some guys here really like it, but nothing is perfect for everyone. I’m just guessing it’s that saddle, could be wrong but Camp doesn’t make many saddles. Maybe there’s more adjustments you could try before you give up on it? If it’s just not gonna work for you, someone here might buy it from you. I’d suggest trying a TreeMotion next as well.

Welcome!

It is the Evo your right. A guy I got it from couldn't fit into it. I'm going to really try it out next week. Thanks for the help with the tree motion saddle. I might try that one if this doesn't work

Basically I SRT 99% of the time. And 80% of that is on a ropewrench these days. Though I spent 3 years of my nearly 8 SRT years exclusively on a runner. The gear below is all I use to get in and move around a canopy. Well add a 10' lanyard and another throwcube with line and weights for double bagging. Quickie for canopy PSP. 3 sling/biners for redirects mostly statics here. Foot ascender and knee ascender for walking line. Chestie for advancing wrench while ascending and my faithful wrench with shorty tether and 28" epi for a michiacan compact hitch. Cube and linewith throw weights for setting my climbline. Simple bullet proof effectiveness.2019-07-03 18.14.45.webp2019-07-03 18.12.54.webp
