I know its early but make a note on your calendar for the 2007 Ohio Chapter TCC on June 2nd with a rain date of June 3rd. The event will be held at Holden Arboretum, the nations largest Arboretum, located about 20 miles east of Cleveland.

We are planning on having some incredible guest speakers to come in and do some talks and demonstrations on June 1st (also at Holden) but I don't want to let the cat out of the bag on the names yet until it is all finalized. After the seminars Holden will be sponsoring a reception on their grounds for all attendees with food and booze. June 1st will also be the set up day for anyone interested in helping with set up.

Our intention is to open the registration for the TCC to all Ohio men and women from February to April with a limit of two climbers per company. After the April deadline we will open the registration to any out of state climber (men and women) that might want to participate on a first come first serve basis. If we still don't fill the 35 available slots by May we will then let Ohio companies send a third climber on a first come first serve basis. Sounds confusing but I am sure it will all work out.

For anyone interested in coming out to assist with set up , judging, or being a technician for the TCC we would love to have you. We will be able to provide lodging for just about anyone interested as long as you don't mind sharing a couch with my Basset Hounds. Let me know if you are interested and I will make sure we find a place for you to stay.

As for scoring the event we plan to have the Master Climb, Work Climb, and Aerial Rescue judged entirely by extremely qualified out of state judges so there shouldn't be any issues with company bias. With any luck the weather will actually cooperate with us this year unlike the ridiculous rain of last year.

PS

The event will be held in the Rhododendron Garden at Holden during peak bloom for the plants. If you happen to like looking at over 650 different species of Rhody in full bloom you may want to come watch if not compete.

More information and registration sheets will be posted later.

Right on!!!!!! I am looking forward to working with all of you guys (where are the girls?) to make this event run as smooth as possible.

Cory, it depends on how many local climbers we get. We have room for 35 contestants and we usually only fill 20-25. We would love to have you up here in any capacity you want.

Hey Rich Whats up with only allowing 2 climbers from companies in state? As long as I can remeber we have been sending 3. I'd hate to see climbers in state get shut out to allow out of state climbers compete

Hey Buckeye, welcome to the Buzz.

We are probably going to rework our ideas on signing climbers up. The latest idea is to have the initial sign up period allowing two climbers per company until April 1st, then if we don't fill all the spots allow Ohio companies to send a third. If, after May 1st, we still don't have the full slate filled we will then allow out of state climbers (though we are working out the workers comp issues on that one, not resolved as of yet, but will be prior to the comp)to sign up until May 20th to hopefully fill the remaining spots.

The one exception to this will be for Madison Tree. Since Jay is the returning champion, Madison will be allowed three climbers right off the bat.

The reasons for doing all of this is to hopefully get climbers to sign up earlier so that we have ample time to prepare for the TCC and to get a wider representation from the Ohio companies as well as to add a feel of the ITCC by having you guys and girls climbing side by side and sharing techniques with climbers from other areas. We will do whatever we can to get as many Ohio climbers in as possible, but you might not want to take your time about signing up. The earlier you sign up the better chance you will get in.

If you have any thoughts on all of this you can either send them to Tommy Williams, the Ohio Chapter ISA, or me. Your input is greatly appreciated and will help us to make this event as fun and fair as possible.

What?? That's rediculous!!

Is the climber competing or is the company ? The best climber should win , come one come all , who is the man . You can't punish a climber because he works for a big company , that's not right.

Riggs,

I agree with you in theory, the problem is that we could really easily run into the situation here where the entire competition could be filled with the employees from one single company. (and I'm not even referring to the nations oldest company, based here) Not that this would be a bad thing if they were the only people who wanted to compete. The problem is that there are tons of incredibly good climbers in Ohio, male and female, many of whom have never competed..... ever. Every year we are trying to bring more and more of these climbers in to get a chance to enjoy the camaraderie and fun and experience that is the TCC. If we booked the whole thing with one company noone else would ever get a shot.

Many of the companies in Ohio have company based comps before they select their representatives for the TCC. As far as I can see this only increases the skill levels for everyone. We do have climbers that compete outside of Ohio because they just don't get the shot to represent their company, its not a great situation but in an effort to please all we will still upset some.

I really appreciate everyones input on this. I don't think, by any stretch, that we have the worlds best and only correct solution. One of the biggest reasons that many of us travel to other chapters to help out is to learn from them and see if we can apply any of what we have learned to benefit our chapters climbers. In the long run we are all just climbers... chapter, gender, or country affiliation doesn't mean anything. Sharing the experience with everyone is the key.

(stepping down from soap box now, sorry bout that)

What up Rich by the way some good splicing, how about that pm of that pulley.I got a solution, make your comp a weekend event and have no limit on the amount of climbers who can enter(from your chapter that is).

Our chapter , as you probally allready know, has a TCC in Western Pa. and one in Eastern. With the top eight meeting in State College for the masters at a different time . I hear what you're saying . I think when a company brings four or five competitors and they are all good climbers, it is fun to watch . A future champion could be sitting on the sidelines.

Jimmy- that is a great idea!! Hopefully we will keep increasing the amount of climbers until a two day event is necessary. Ideally I would love to have no limit on the amount of competitors, but the amount of volunteer time and effort it takes to pull off an event that large is huge.

Riggs- I really like your PennDel system. The way your Chapter is spread out I think you guys have come up with an excellent solution to make it work. As I recall quite a few guys competed in both competitions, which is sort of like having out of state competitors. Do you guys have any sort of limit on how many climbers a company can send? One possible way to allow many climbers from one company might be a requirement that for every two competitors a company sends they must donate 1 person to help tech, judge, or set up.

ps Jimmy your pulley is attached.

OR... you can do what we do and limit to 5 climbers from each Co.

I have six climbers at my company including myself and Id hate to see one of them sit and watch. If we had an in house comp the less exp guys would lose out and not get the exp of the comp. The comp really helped me grow as climber and I dont want them to miss that oppurtunity. On the other hand I dont want me or one of my more exp guys to miss out because may have chance at doing well at the comp.why limit the comp.In the past I raced bmx and sometimes there was over 100 riders in one age group and they made it work.A local company here usually fields about 10 climbers for the comp every year and I think its great the more the better(they have won 13 of the last 14 I think).its a great challenge with more climbers.

Arborists that don't judge or tech have NO CLUE what's involved with setting up and making a comp happen. The TCC chair has to make dozens of phone calls to; secure a site; get enough volunteers to prune the trees (bucket truck, chip truck & chipper, etc.), set up the events, judges, techs, scoring team with laptops, power to run the laptops, prizes for the winners, dismantle the events, etc. I am the Illinois TCC Chair and it's getting harder and harder to get quality judges and volunteers. We set the limit at 30 contestants and that takes us from 5:30 AM til 7PM to complete on the comp day. Having more than 30 contestants would run into a 2 day event. That means the TCC Chair would have to make even more phone calls. Please have a little compassion for the wonderful arborists that make these events happen. It takes an unbelievable amount of time and commitment. GET INVOLVED.
