Off-axis carabiner loading with a rope wrench

When I use a rope walking system to ascend my rope wrench tether wiggles the carabiner sideways and causes significant off-axis loading potential. It also causes the legs of my hitch to eventually become uneven. It's a PITA to stop mid rope and re-orient everything mid climb. What methods do y'all suggest I try to prevent this?

What carabiner are you using and which tether do you have?...2 legs or single. I use a single eye tether with an ultra O biner with 8 mm HRC tied with 2 scaffold knots to make the eyes and have never had an issue. In reality it is often a challenge to orient the biner after installation of the eyes and tether. Maybe the cinching action of the knots help to keep everything oriented. Worth a try and cheaper then an eye to eye

Some more options would be to put rubber grommets on the carabiner, on each side of the hitch legs. Use an o ring to trap the eyes on the carabiner, or put it around the hitch legs, before clipping. There are also commercial carabiner traps that could be used instead of the o rings. One more is to eliminate the carabiner by using a soft shackle connection on the hitch cord, rather than eyes.

Thanks for all the answers folks. I use, a DMM hitch climber three hole pulley, a single eye tether, and an 8mm eye to eye, all clipped to a Petzl oval carabiner. I'll try using some sort of o ring to hole the e2e and tether together. It looks like a 2 eye tether might help too.

Nah I used a single eye tether with HC for years. Just add a piece of gas hose rubber. I had about thirty pieces laying around. But never lost any....still have them....zoom in2018-10-16 22.34.35.webp

I've been trying different progress captures. I've used the over the shoulder lanyard the most. The other good one for me has been girth hitching a 2' sling to the top of the wrench and just dragging it up with my hand as I ascend.

Here's a link to a product on TreeStuff that some folks seem to like, although I'm not sure whether or not it will spread far enough to work for the purpose you have in mind. Read the reviews before you buy; some folks have a complaint about durability.

Also, I think it might have been @Reg Coates who recommended cutting up a bicycle inner tube and punching holes in them to do the same thing cheaply. It might be worth a try.

How do you like the Phlotich pulley Swing? I have a couple and love them. Nice hitch climber pulley for the $ me thinks.
I was not sold when I held it in my hand. But when setup and using it good heaven's. Love them. And I have 6 HCers....ha ha. They tend so smooth and my 2 are the bushing types. Cannot wait to score 2 bearing ones. Life of a tree climber. Rico I give them a huge big up.
