Oak root collar excavation questions

Can someone help me make sense of these roots? I guess I need to do more digging to figure out if the one going across the trunk is actually attached to the tree somewhere. Is the bulbous-looking but the root flare? I don’t know if I should keep digging deeper, or if I have gone too far

Thanks - yeah, I figured that one going across was bad news. My main concern is whether I’ve gone deep enough, or if it looks like I need to keep going. I have been researching as much as I can, but I can’t tell if I have exposed what needs to be or if I now have roots open to the air that should be covered.
