Oak Log

I have a job coming up that is a nice Red Oak with a DBH of approx 35-37" the I can get a very nice 16-20ft log out of it straight without a limb on it. I really want to do something besides dump the log at the log dump. Do any of you guys sell your logs and if so about what can you expect to get from a log like this? I really would hate to see this log go to waste.

Thanks.

Not wanting to pop your bubble or enthusiasm, I just firewooded a black cherry just as big, only longer w/out any knots. Could find no one interested even when I priced it down to $200. It was veneer quality. I used the internet, yellow pages from five metro areas, and local press. Now I'll be warm next winter with some very valuable heat sources. I'd hoped against this but.

Either way, good luck and keep trying.

Well I am going to take her downa nd see for sure what's up. If it is good and I can't get rid of it I am going to have it milled up for my personal use. To good of wood to see go to waste I know alot of craft guys up north that will possibly take some off of my hands.

Hey oakwilt- next time you might look into finding someone with a portable sawmill around there to mill it for you, and then you can sell it yourself to woodworkers. While there may not be much demand for logs because no one can handle them, there's always demand for lumber. Maybe you did try this, I couldn't tell from your post. Going through that step adds cost, but often it can pay back plenty. It does seem a shame to waste wood. There's a guy in Smithville with a Woodmizer, but I don't know if he actually does portable work.

I had three people w/ portables quote me on the per-day rates for sawing on site. It was more money than I could afford at the moment, and more than going to the clinic for a total MRI. It's still my fault though, not having the resources but I was working by memory of the past when felling black walnuts in Iowa 30 years ago. Things have changed I guess.

there's something to be said for stockpiling your logs or dumping them directly at the sawyers yard. sometimes they will split it with ya. i found someone who mills for me at $350 per thousand board feet.
i also dump slabs of wood in her yard..she seals the end and sells em to wood turners.
it may not always be worth the effort involved but we can do our part in good faith to utilize the resources we create thru our work..
nice to build a deck or fix a fence and not pay for lumber either

I had a situation like this not too long ago, my first time selling wood. Couple things; 1) the oak market is in the crapper right now. 2) My log was considerably larger than yours, so I had to cut it in order for the log truck to be able to lift it. By doing that I lost a bunch of money. If their truck can't lift it, either have a way to lift it yourself, or cut it as long as they can possibly lift. If you have to shave off 4' from a 16' log for them to be able to lift it then do that... but don't cut it in half.
