Honestly the hard hat doesn't make you safe. Being aware and skilled makes you and the others around you safe from you. Them being safe depends alot on them. It's a dangerous job and for the most part when the sh$% goes down is a hard hat on a climber really going to matter. I do wear them just not that day and any other that I choose not too.

yes, it does NOT make EVERYTHING you do safe, you are correct.
But not understanding how easily the human head is hurt or destroyed by the smallest falling dead limb, or snap on a rope or whatever shows something about the person that does not wear a hardhat. And not understanding how important the head is maybe?
Not wearing a hardhat often indicates that many, many, many other safe practices are also NOT followed as well.
I have not ever met a climber or tree guy that does not wear a hardhat and everything else they do is safe.
If they don't wear a hardhat, always, it equals unsafe work practices all around. Also, likewise, the ignorance of proper rigging goes along with those people as well.
Arguing about hardhat use this day and age says a lot.
