Wow boys, The trees are down without incident. I really just wanted your ideas on where to place the pull line. And to clear things up I would never place a deeper notch on a back leaning tree, that's a no brainer in my opinion.
If anyone is interested, G.Beranek's book Fundamentals of General Tree Work-he discusses hinge placement (chapter 26), I would guess he has an idea or two on how to fell a tree.
Any how FYI-Before I dropped the trees I climbed them all to place ropes and cut the weight off the back side---these trees were edge trees with lots of limbs weighted with snow--had no choice but to cut that weight of to shift the trees' favor a bit,---And Daniel you are right "piece of cake"---. I bore cut all three trees to set up a nice hinge--walked out of the danger zone then called for the pull. No problem, I may have worried a bit about the decay, yet that's the inner voice of caution, and I usually listen to it.
