No wires

Double Whip Tackle correct. We did use two GRCS's for that job. We tensioned the dwt and just left it alone. I did leave the slings and block in the tree because I was lazy and no threat of them getting damaged.

I forgot about that article at least somebody read it. I like to use rope in some fashion to help secure splits. I feel the tree should stay dynamic and be able to absorb some of it's own energy.

Todd, like I said that article was very informative, and I've kept it with my other rigging articles that were worth keeping. I'm sure others have read it. I also think that you had posted some pics of that job here on the Buzz too?

Do you think rope is a better choice than binder straps when securing split trunks?

I agree that the tree should stay dynamic to a certain degree, but I like the static tension that I get from using those 10,000 lb binder straps spaced every from few feet around a cracked stem.

In fact I just used them 2 weeks ago on a job with the GRCS and Hobbs Block. Great combo, I'll try to post the pics tonight.

It's not much of an article more of a story. Not alot of technical info.Maybe the powers that be can put it here? As far as bindings go I only use them for smaller trees when the seperation needs to be put together. I will also use rope higher up to support the upper load. The upper load needs to be protected more than the seperation it's that weight that will make the seperation fail.

Tod, are you using a dynamic line then? Or am I missing something? Also, when you tension using the GRCS and the DWT, how much tension do you apply?

I will use some type of double braid. Depending on how much mass is there would decide how tight. I would say pretty darn tight. The double braid will still stretch quite a bit. This way you are not disturbing the natural enviorment of the tree and still providing protection or should I say hazard reduction for climber and crew.

hey tod.
you guys rock. i'm guessing there was no crane access? have you ever found a tree (with no crane access) you couldn't figure out a way to stabilize enough to remove? i'm trying to picture the tree tod kramer would walk away from and not seeing anything..?
k.

Thats a perfect use for the straps. The trees I've posted had much more mass hanging very far from the split.I think they would not work. Kathy, there have been many trees I could not rig or get a crane or lift to. So the client may have to move something or we may damge something.

Mahk. Thanks for taking time out of your busy persoanal schedule to post the link. I appreciate it as well as other buzzers, thank you.

Having the right equipment and knowing it's limitations is part of our job briefings. Having 2 GRCS's made the work easier and more efficiant. It could have been done with M.A. and porta wraps it just would have taken longer with more people.
