EDISON, N.J. - Police say an employee of an Edison recycling company has been killed after being caught in a wood chipper.

Edison Township police spokesman Lt. Joe Shannon says the fatality occurred shortly after noon Tuesday at Generated Materials.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.

Police withheld the man's identity pending notification of his family.

Shannon said the man became entangled in a conveyer belt attached to the wood chipper.

The company declined to comment.

There's a clever bloke in Australia that has developed an RFID based chipper safety system that could prevent these horrible deaths from happening.

Why the chipper manufacturers refuse to integrate Mather's RFID system into their big chippers is one of the more appalling mysteries in this business, and a stain on the entire tree industry in my opinion.

More and more groundmen are eaten alive with each passing year. But still the authorities like the ISA and TCIA turn a blind eye on this ongoing carnage, refusing to bite the hands of the manufacturers that insist on ignoring this growing problem, because they advertise in their magazines and publications.

It's one of the dirtiest little embarrassing secrets in this industry.

It's a damn shame the chipper manufacturers don't feel the same way Dooley.

The first chipper fatality listed on the IndSafe website was a friend of mine, a fantastic groundman/truck driver with 8 years experience, and a family.

I remember hearing about this product when it came out.

I never saw it being used, but it seemed like a good idea.

I did think that to be truly effective, a person would have to wear one of the bands on each limb to be truly protected.

How well do the bands hold up, with sweat, dirt, rain, etc?
