new Stihl tree saw already cost me for repairs (also, M-Tronic tech tip)

Awhile back i posted that all my shit was ripped off, and i had to replace all my saws. among those taken was a vintage MS200T (one of you commented, '2008 is vintage? that makes me feel old' or something like that. Truth)

anyway, my only choice was the MS201TCM. cause i balked @ the price of the MS201 in early 2022, and by the time i decided to pull the trigger, prolly April 2022, the only ones available were M-Tronica w/the catalytic. (We're SAVED. We're all SAVED. the planet is SAVED. I have a 33cc saw w/a catalytic converter.)

So i'm up blocking down this Norway pine on a very warm Dec day, (not cold enough to switch the temp shutter, not even close), the MS201's idling on my saddle, and it dies. That never happened before. (not sarcasm)
won't restart. it was end of day anyway, so i came down and tried to re-start onna ground.
nope. sputtered like they do when you on choke position, when they ready to fire right up, next pull, once U switch to RUN. but sputter is all she would do. tried next day from a cold start. Same thing... little burst. then nothing.

so ends up, it cost me about $120 for repairs. i have the bill... maybe i can take a pic for you all. and ever since that post i did about, 'not getting good oil flow', i now ALWAYS run my saws @ full RPM, as directed by Stihl in the Manuel. I clean and maintain my saws, use only fresh 92/93 oct fuel, and HQ 2-stroke oil... i even transport onna coupla 1/2" foam floor tiles as a cushion to minimize the harshness of the truck bed... whatev. I'm TRYING, is my point.

And truly ladies and gents, i'm PISSED @ Stihl. cause my old MS200T, i had that beauty for 15 years, and the only thing i EVER did to that one, was a new pull cord. that's IT. not even a new spark plug. (that i can recall, anyway) And now Stihl doesn't give me the choice to go 'old tech' anymore... i am forced to go w/newfangled. well, not the hugest fan, i gotta tell ya.

and a quick aside, i also think itz downright WEIRD how the rpm of the saw, under load, doesn't drop even the slightest bit. i always think i'm gonna blow the engine, LOL! Well i guess thatz M-Tronica doing itz job. Happy Hanukkah, I have M-Tronica. We gotta get Sandler to add a verse to his song. ;)

OK so NO NEED to call a WAHHH-mbulance. 1673029089311.png i'm done bitchin'. (i think) i have something to offer:

How to reset M-Tronic engine control after a new spark plug or airfilter is installed.
1) Start saw with thumb control switch in cold start (choke) position
2) Start the saw and run for a min. of 90 secs, w/choke still on. (M-Tronic should NOT stall, even after warming)
3) After the 90sec mark, w/OUT touching the throttle trigger, manually push the choke/run/stop thumb control forward to the OFF position and kill the engine. If you mistakenly release the button w/the throttle, start the process from step #1 again.

According to the tech @ the shop I use (and I like them VERY much. not like the old d__kheads i used to patronize) this 90 sec or longer runtime, w/switch all the way back, and then shutting off w/out blipping the throttle, will re-set M-Tronic to whatev new conditions there are. He used new plug, or AF as examples, but i guess this could just as easily apply to climate, elevation, etc. If this is in the Manuel, i guess it ain't news. But i didn't see it. (i didn't comb thru it like it's the arborist test guide)

There.

Hope U all are having better luck than I, w/your EARTH SAVING, back-from-the-climate-tipping-point, catalytic, tree saws.

And Happy New Year to you all.

Oh! gotta go, my WAHmbu-Bus just pulled up.

Dont you have a spare topper in the truck?
well, of course, it's ALWAYS the way right... since it was a very local job, only a 10min ride, i fig'd i'd only take 1 tree saw and a MS250 18" for felling. if i traverse far, of course i go redundant w/saws. but the 201T had never given me reason to doubt it (in all my LONG 8 months of ownership), so i thought no reason to take the 194 as well... DOH!!! I'm so glad the sun was setting. (i didn't get to the site until after lunch)

Aren’t you glad they flew people all over the world in battery jets to come up with the regs for your little saw?
i love that you brought up Battery Jets. I have a little bit o' absolutely unfounded, unverified, personally paranoid conspiracy theory rhetoric for you all.

Okay class, gather round...

Iiiiiiiiiiiiii think... the reason Y the US gov't is pushing SO hard for EV's, is cause the military/industrial complex wants as much of their last century of fossil fuels as they can hoard. Cause Iiiiiiiiiiii've never seen an Osprey, or Apache, of F-(insert grossly over-budget model # here) fighter jet, or tank, that runs on L-ion batteries!

Have you?

At least, i think that's part of it. Therez prolly also a grossly entangled web of payola & incentives involved in the whole manufacture/shipping process. Batteries, vehicles... i don't think my imagination's fertile enough to dream up all the diff ways these corps, banks and pols are getting fat

I’m sorry that your new saw has caused you trouble. Unfortunately, that does happen once in a while.

We have at least a dozen M-Tronic saws, and generally love them. They require far less carburetor maintenance than the older saws. Sure, they act up sometimes, and have to go to the dealer to have the carburetor reprogrammed, but of the dozen we have, we probably send three saws a year to the shop, and our saws run hard, all day, every day.

I was skeptical of the new technology when it first came out, and we waited a year or two before buying our first, but since that’s all we buy, and have replaced nearly all our older saws with the new tech, and I’m very glad we have.

Thanks Reach! That's a nice cool mist of fire suppressing wisdom on my friction inducing frustration! It IS a good saw. The price is a little LuLu, but then again, so is just about everything right now.

Except for HotWheelz. I saw a thing onna news.

But prolly just touching a modern-day HotWheelz will getcha some kinda blood cancer 10 yrs down the pike. I H8 2 B a killjoy but... everything's poisonous as a death adder these days. BUT NOT MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER

…is to get voted back into office.

My 200t has had multiple rebuilds and tune ups and never been the reliable workhorse it has always been purported to be. My husqky battery powered, however, made me a lot of money with no headaches.

Good luck w your 201!

I had the exact thing happen to me with the exact saw writhing 2 hrs of “run” time. I took it back and they said it was a defective saw and gave my money back. I personally feel that a 194 with the 1/4 pitch conversion is more productive, and way lighter, then the 201 lines.

I really like my battery husky basically no chance I'll buy another gas top handle saw

I have a 241C and a 362C.

I love the Mtronic technology. Both saws run great.

By the way, the Mtronic system automatically resets itself during normal usage and it is not necessary to go through the manual reset process.

Well you can’t say fairer than that.

I have 3 mtronic saws never had a problem with them related to the mtronic. My newest 362 had carburetor issues but it wasn't related to the mtronic the needle wasn't seating correctly so it would flood anytime it got warm. My first 362 was one of the original mtronic it's still going strong I sold it to a friend last year.

I have owned 8 201t's. 4 of them with computer carbs....m tronic. Have other larger mtronic rear handles. Nary a problem. Looks like you got a pig out the blocks. My 200t's gave so many carb problems. Always tuning them. Glad to see them gone. But hey working saws every day will obviously give out at times. I always sell my saws after about 5 years of hard use. Replace with new. Battery saws can kiss my ass.
