need chipper

well im getting that green whisper chipper friday. Will put the new blades on asap...any advice for how to adjust the cutter bar? never really messed with that before. I have plenty of experience with these dinosaurs so I'm confident I will keep the bruised ears and back lashes to a minimum

Get a new bed knife(cutter bar) too. Replace every Allen bolt in the adjustment mechanism and blade holder mechanism as well. Put lots of white lithium lube on the threads of every new bolt and religiously torque to specs.

You really should locate an old Asplundh owners manual for that model, or at least an old pro mechanic who can walk you through exactly how to maintain and keep that old beauty up to snuff Phil.

Congratulations and remember to duck!

Lithium grease will work but a real anti-seize compound is a better choice:

When you have all of the adjustment screws apart take a die and run it through all of the threads to clean them. Then apply the anti-seize compound.

Adjusting the knives isn't easy and requires delicate flesh to be near super sharp knives. Be careful!!!

Find out how short the knives can be before they need to be replaced. I didn't know that and I had a knife come out of the pocket. It jammed the drumhead and stopped it in an instant! Fortunately no one got hurt. All of the broken blade pieces stayed inside the 'doghouse'

If there isn't a slit rubber flap in front of the knives get one in there. I made one out of a tire flap. I cut it to dimension on my table saw and then cut the slits. Before cutting the slits drill holes where the slits will terminate so that they don't continue tearing.

thanks for the good advice...im gonna callthe chipper "little foot" from the land before time....i was thinking of welding a lower jaw piece with teeth to the bottom of the deflecter and painting eyeballs on there...make it look like a dinosaur puking chips

Maybe some painted graphics depicting that, yeah.

But the first time you bump your head on those welded on teeth climbing into the back of your chiptruck?

Best of luck Phil.
