The NFB has a huge collection of short films available on the web. During the next winter storm they might make an enjoyable diversion. Here's just the random example I watched tonight. It's about the arctic and it hasn't changed that much, you could still have a very similar adventure to these explorers.

Or just google NFB to access the library.

Thanks for the link!

I gave my TV away two years ago. After having it sit around for months I figured I didn't need it.

Since then any TV time has come from the Internet via Hulu and the like.

I found 'Waterwalker' about Bill Mason. This is a movie that I've known about for years but never watched. Now I will!

Thanks for posting, Bevin. I remember mosquitos live that in the Virgin Islands. Dang. What is happening in that territory now?

Until you've been to the arctic you don't know what mosquitos are. They're so bad that....

What's happening now? Still many parts that are as close to heaven as it comes, but mining, oil, tourism and population growth are leaving an impact.

I've been watching a bunch of these movies this winter. It reminds me what a difference one person can make and how some of the best parts of being Canadian have been influenced by a couple determined people using the power of media.

In elementry school these movies would travel from school to school and the big projector would come out. It was one of the best parts of school until the film broke and the teacher would have to tape it together. The avalibilty of video now must make for way more informed kids. You'd hope.

More informed kids, or more entertained kids...Could be both?

Can you "unpack" that? (I can't believe I just typed that question.) Is this film giving you inspiration to take a similar journey?

All I need is money and time. The inspiration has been there since I can remember. Wish I could of filmed alot of the trips I've already done.

It sounds like you just watched the Ungava movie link. Did you notice there's hundreds of great movies on that NFB site?

I haven't checked the NFB site yet, but I'll be checking it out when I have the time. I have so many books to read right now...the list never gets shorter, it just gets different!

You wouldn't be the first Aussie to learn that. In the middle of the night at a tree planting tent camp I heard a loud roar. I assumed it was a bear so I went back to sleep. It turned out it was the Aussie's German Shepard's death roar as it was being killed by a beaver. The Aussie did OK though. He killed the beaver with a machete screaming "bloody platapus".

I think I've seen the beaver season you were refering to and they can be ferocious.

Grey Owl the great northern beaver whisperer's silent film. His most famous cabin is about 50km from my home.
