Nasty tip over splits house in Santa Rosa today

Re: Nasty tip over splits house in Santa Rosa toda

Thanks BB and CTM for the info.

How is it that the spin cable is dangerous with a non spin ball?

Why doesn't it spin while under load? Is it just some cable making magic?

Re: Nasty tip over splits house in Santa Rosa toda

I use rotational cable on my crane because I never use more than a 1 part line and I want the extra WLL. I believe it's about 9200# on a single part line. It's also less expensive. I would think on a crane that size they would use non-rotational cable because of using multiple part lines.

You have it backwards brushbandit, nonrotational is for single part lines, if your going to always use multipart lines you should use rotational cable, this is because of the construction of non-rotational; the core and the outer layer are wound in different directions, they still spin, but because the layers are spinning in different directions the hook doesn't. Now bend that over a ton of sheaves and the layers are wearing against each other so much they wearout very quickly, which is also the reason non-rotational cable has a safety factor of 5 to 1 instead of 3.5 to 1.

Think of it like 3 strand rope when it gets loaded it untwists a bit, rotational cable is the same construction as 3 strand rope.

As the vast majority of my work is single part line, I use anti-rotation cable, and take the reduced working load into account. I like the ball not spinning up like it used to. If I need to replace it more often it is a minor cost factor in the big picture. I just got my new inspection certificate and the inspecter liked my choice of cable for the work I do. If I did all multiline I wouldn't use it.

Yeah, thanks for the info. I would think that the rotational would cause the lower block to spin which would be a pain. I didn't consider that the non-rotational will fatigue due to it's construction when used in a multi part setup. I still like the 9200# pull I can do with the rotational. It matches up to the choker capacity of our slings and covers just about any wood we lift. We just cut to a good length as per the wood weight chart for very large diameter logs. The cable does spin when unloaded, I just grease the zerk on the ball pretty frequently.
