My New Year Resolution is..

Well this took a fun turn. For the potty training proration I suggest looking into “elimination communication”. It basically trains the parent(s) to know when baby needs to go. You learn their ques and timing. We cloth diaper and our son got his first potty at 4 months old. He is naked most of the time because we feel that it helps their physical development for whatever reason, but because we know when he needs to go we aren’t worried about him “going” all over the house. Of course there are the rare occasion of pee but has never pooped. He is 15 months old now and he literally crawls over to his potty when he needs to go, saddles up, grunts and signs all done. Not bragging (maybe a little), just stoked to have learned about “elimination communication”!

Now to contribute to the resolution……not really into them because I feel we should all continuously try to improve. Since it is a new fiscal year for the business, I have some goals which are get both my guys certified, plot them up and start two crews, get a bucket truck and a wheel loader of some sort. Also work on a plan to get the guys more money.

Best of luck to all of your resolutions, congrats on the family additions, and happy new year!

OK, so this year’s version of that goal is to lose 15 pounds. Instead of losing 10 last year, I gained five!
Can we update this resolution again, to lose 20 pounds this time? Or is it time to simply give up and decide that I am just not going to see my college weight again?

Dunno man, but be kind to yourself either way.
No worries, I do. I take after my grandfather in a lot of ways. Mostly that’s a good thing, but he spent most of his life at 5’ 11” and 250 pounds. I sit at 5’ 10” and about 200-205, so I can’t really complain, I just can’t pig out at the buffets like my father and brother unless I want to take a week off from eating to make up for it.

Blame Big Agri, GMO foods and high fructose corn syrup. You are in a great area for farm to table locally grown foods that are or almost are all organic. I would take as much advantage as I could of that opportunity. You are at a sort of transition point in your lifetime metabolism and you will find it easier to put weight o if you continue with your younger eating habits. Make the change now and your heart will thank you for it when you hit your 50's.

I love local foods, I mostly buy and eat them. My parents raise a couple pigs a year and by brother has chickens, so I get some of that, and then my family usually splits a steer too.

I have friends who raise produce too, and there’s a farm stand on every corner too, so there’s no lack of fresh, local food in season. It’s great.

As for diet, I did make some big changes there! I used to be able to eat a cheesesteak with a big helping of cheese fries and a large fountain drink. Now I’ll eat a taco salad with unsweetened ice tea if I go out to lunch. I eat less in a day now than I ate in a normal meal ten years ago. A friend and I have been considering joining a local gym too, I just don’t like working out, and my knees would rather I didn’t either. Either way though, I do try to eat well, and keep sensible.

Resolutions? More climbing of course! And one tree in particular. When I was a student half a century ago in London, I free climbed a gigantic oak tree in Richmond Great Park on the Thames above town. This tree was many hundreds of years old and absolutely amazing. I want to find that same tree again for my 70th birthday this year and have another go at it!

I'm not big on vague resolutions, but I do make lists of specific yearly goals I'd like to achieve. This year's list:

  • Run 2000kms total
  • Sub 39 min 10k
  • Sub 19 min 5k
  • Sub 90 min half-marathon
  • Finish my Ironman race
  • Read 52 books
  • Volunteer 50 hours
  • Attain basic French language skills
  • Send birthday and Christmas cards to immediate family members
  • Call my parents at least once a month
All very do-able in my eyes. Posting it here to keep myself honest.

Is the knee issue deterioration, strength, or other?

Bodyweight and lightweights at/ around home can do lots in 5-10 minutes. Muscles straining burns fat.

Gyms take a lot of time unless you can warm up by human-powered commuting.

Probably deterioration, from 20 years of construction, landscaping, and trees. Add in some Lyme that wasn’t treated as soon as it should have been, and probably some Ehler-Danlos, and my knees complain frequently.

I do try to get some exercise at home, and I go chase my nephews around every chance I get too. A five year old can burn off some energy for you in a hurry!

Gyms do take time, but there’s one about five minutes from my house, so the commute isn’t too bad, but I’m not sure if I’ll actually go or not.

Was the Knees- over- Toes guy mentioned here?

A professional evaluation and rehab program might do you right.

Wishing success with however you work towards your goals.
