My Near Death Video-- My pride is my Shame

[ QUOTE ]
I used to feel like that after about 4 years of freeclimbing to the top of any tree it was possible to (because that was how I was taught to do it), and taking on rigging jobs with rudimentary equipment. You learn alot about the nuts and bolts of health and safety doing it that way, but you get the feeling you've outstayed your welcome with Lady Luck, and the reaper has an ominous presence.

Then I broadend my horizons and saw how other climbers worked with routine safety. I just couldn't understand how anyone could make it pay by climbing a tree tied in all the time...

So that became my focus - finding safer and more efficient ways of doing the job. Its a constant flux, with plenty of pitfalls. If we don't know anyone with great experience to guide us in the field, we have TreeBuzz; a safe haven of experienced pros with sensible advice.

Ditto.

And 3 cheers for the Buzz!

You'll get over it , obviously you did , the guy who should really feel like an a hole is the operator of the crane . Besides rigging it wrong , you stated that you are a green horn . What about the guy who was running the crane ? was he owner operator ? That crane felt that mishap more than anyone, seems like a team failure and you shouldn't take all the blame , I hope the crane operator learned something too . How about TAPS for a song , keep that nonsense up that's the song you won't hear .

Everyone makes mistakes regardless of experience or ability. Good of you to use it as a learning experience. I definitely think the crane op should have said something before making that pick. I'm sure he sharted as it was coming over.

I apprciate your words.

Yeah, somtimes I feel like have overstayed my welcome.

Espicially now with 2 kids and a third on the way.

I still love going up a tress and swingng around with a handsa thining/pruning. (lke I used to to in Colorado).

But here in Atlata the everyday work is so heavy andthe consequenses are so much more perminant.

I really love trees but I feel tat I may well be on the sunset times of my tree career.

I agree. The operator should have said something. But, maybe he doesn't know much about the dynamics of tree work.

And that is a topic in itself: Crane operators who don't know much about the Art & Science of Practical Rigging.
