so, naturally i got hooked on the wood thing and found this:

There were also lots of airplanes made from wood. Like the biggest one ever constructed, The Spruce Goose and fighter planes during WWII when there was a shortage of metal. It's a wonderful building material. Sure frustrating to watch a logging truck per minute roll by my house to build up a stockpile at a pulpmill that may never reopen with plans of turning trees into disposable diapers. Oop there went another truck!

There's a great pic of the car with a WWII Mosquito in the background. That is the best known wood plane from that era. Truly a remarkable airplane.
