Ms 661\'s

Any ideas when the 661's will hit the dealer shelves here in Ontario? I wonder if I can or should wait for it...before I go out and buy an ms 660?

And

What bar length is the best for balance?

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Ms 661\'s

There were some predictions/ rumors a while back that it would be late spring or early summer here in the US. They were right when they said the 461 would arrive last fall. I see they have no more 440 or 460 saws on their website. They had the R models listed for a little while and they are all gone now. I would expect to see the 661 this year. I am hoping for good things the 461 seems to be a decent saw. I am not really thrilled with the antivibe on my 660 its way too hard on my hands to run all day even with the antivibe it has I will be happy to see a spring style antivibe on the new one. One I will say is the 660 is reliable and has good power even in stock form a few easy mods really woke mine up too.

If it will not be used for really extended periods I would say the 660 would be a good choice. As for bar length I find they do not balance well to begin with and a 24 or a reduced weight 28 will be as good as it gets from there on out they arent great. Mine wears either a 34 or 42 depending on the job and even the 34 is nose heavy. The same 34 on my husky 390 balances quite well. Either way Im sure you will be happy with your purchase.

I am 110% the other way , I will wait for the 661 , the 261 is far better than the 260 and the 461 is better than the 460 , the 660 to me is a real disappointment , the 066 was a real saw , these new 660's are nothing to me , I would sooner run a 460 than a 660 , the newer stihls like the 261 and 461 have way more torque than what they replaced

This is good news. I bought a 460 just before they left so I would have a back up and I am said I did not go with the 461 after hearing the reviews on them. I ran one of the first 441 saws and hated it but the new m-tronic version is nice I really liked it. The 261 is a much better work saw as you have said. I modded a friends 260 and was pretty impressed with it and ran a stock 261 later on and was shocked at the out of the box performance. It wont beat the modded 260 but it will give it a work out. I am hoping the 661 will really shine like the 461.

I have a late model 066 with decomp. and it is no different than my 660 however both are modded with high output oilers. The 660 actually has a slightly bigger oil tank not that it needs it because neither of them oil well. Thats one issue I hope stihl addresses on the 661 along with antivibe.

Re: Ms 661\'s

Why Stihl did away with manual oilers on their big saws after the 084 is a mystery to me. A very frustrating one when you're running long bars.

Re: Ms 661\'s

I've read reports about excessive vibration on the 660

BUT...

Not sure why people talk about too much vibration in the ms660, because according to some stats I found on a UK site the little home owners ms170 has higher vibration levels! I can only speculate that the excessive vibrations people experience with the 660 have more to do with the chain, its type, size, length and condition.

MS660
Vibration levels left/right 2) 4.1/5.9 m/s²

MS 170 (Stihl's) cheapest saw!
Vibration levels left/right 2) 4.3/6.2 m/s²

Would like some people's input?

Thanks

Re: Ms 661\'s

Run a long bar and skip tooth chain and you will really notice it. Im not sure I would trust their ratings. I will to get the part # posted tomorrow for the oiler. I know my 066 came with the high output. I had to add it to my660. The 660r might come with it stock I can't remember.

Its sad my 460 with a 28" oils better than my 660 even when running the same bars. My 390 husky will leave the bar and chain soaked in oil. My 660 just barely has a slight film at best. With my 394 I actually had to turn the oiler all the way down just to make sure I wouldnt run out too soon.

Re: Ms 661\'s

The 660 is a great saw so long as you don't run the stock muffler. I've never had any oiling problems.

What changes are they making for the 661?

Re: Ms 661\'s

1122 640 3201 is the high output. Gord I cut alot of hardwood and thats where I have oiling issues. I never see it in conifers. As for changes I am sure it will have a similar design to the 461.

Re: Ms 661\'s

You can order parts and rebuild the standard one and convert it as well. I cant remember the part numbers though.

Re: Ms 661\'s

I run into oil problems on just about every saw I use when I get up to the longer bars , I get paid by what I produce not by the hour so time is money , I find the 460 runs the 28 inch bar better than the 660 , I run 20 inch on my 562's and no bigger than 24's on my 372's cause they just donot put enough oil out period, I cut alot of big oak . I also found on the longer bars the type of oil made a huge difference and in most cases you get what you pay for

Re: Ms 661\'s

Should I order an MS660 with a 36" or 42" bar (for the really big maples)...I just looked at one tree I've been asked to take down and it has about a 7 food diameter trunk...

Thanks,
Ken

P.S. I'll be getting a 24" bar for more regular use

Re: Ms 661\'s

if you are going to be cutting that big of stuff and I cut that big quite often , I use a 36 inch as much as I can get away with and cut from both sides , I have run bars as big as 48 inch but I use skip tooth chain on that

Re: Ms 661\'s

Thanks Guys for your advice...It has helped me with my decision for a 36" bar...

overall best decision

Ken

P.S. the person with the 7 foot tree has some BIG tractors so hopfuly I could come at it from both sides with the 36" bar and then push the remaining stump with BIG loader tractor and snap it off...
