Moving log to Mill

Maybe after the war, later 40's early 50's. Just guessing. I know my grandfather was moving timber to his sawmill with horses in that timeframe.
 
I'm sure they are making a mill grinding stone. They look to be scribing and then scoring the channels into the face of the stone which facilitate the grinding process. My wife's ancestors used to own a mill in the NC mountains, which is still in operation. Her mother is of German stock, and the rumor is there is Cherokee in the blood line also.
 
I am not sure. Wiki mentions basalt or granite, but that finding the right stone material was crucial to a long lasting stone that would not leave excessive grit. The rotating mill stone goes back 2500 years or more according to online searching, and the two mill stones could cost as much as the rest of the millhouse.
