Moss Cinching Lanyard prototype

There is a slim and flexible splice for double braid ropes from Cousins, there’s a thread in the Splice Rack about it.

Finished the latest version of the lanyard prototype and tested it. Works well, it's now my working lanyard. Functions as a secure/not cross-loaded end cinched SRS, traditional on side D's and center attached MRS without any changes to the lanyard for any configuration.

Shot some vid with it in use, will post when when I finish the edit.

The smaller stitched area is a constricter to form a tight eye for the carabiner. The sewn eye to the right of the ring is the life support join.

Hi Moss - how smooth is remote retrieval (clipping retrieval line into crab...)?

It can be set up for remote retrieve but not in the cinched config shown, can’t pull the bight past the carabiner on the eye, it’s too secure ;-)

Posting a video shortly that will show how it functions, pulling on the carabiner will get you nowhere, it’s tough to get how this thing works looking at photos, video will make it clear.

Yea and I pretty much did guess your idea in my post #105 it's a rope with a ring on the end but you did make it original and do it in a way I wasn't envisioning. Looks good, I like it.

Yeah, at the time you made the guess I'd ditched the F8 on the end, essentially a ring with horns. I was working with a shackle instead. shackle is still in the mix, there's two versions, ring or shackle. The difference as you can see is that either way it's a carabiner on the end, it's critical to versatile normal lanyard functionality and the carabiner and its tight eye is critical to providing the lock-off for a bight through the ring or shackle. Paul Poynter (SoftBankHawks) got me going with his ring on the end comment, I knew it was close but not quite.

Reed’s ring solution is excellent for a climber who doesn’t cinch their lanyard very often. For my climbing style I’m cinching more often than any other lanyard mode. The floating ring requires that the carabiner be taken out of the tight eye and clicked back through on the other side of the ring. Too much fidgeting around. After a few work climbs I’ll find out if slipping a bight through a ring and over a carabiner is too much fidgeting around, I’ll let ya’ll know either way.

Ha ha. I could tell from your video (yes, I made it through the whole thing), that yours is too much fidgeting and fudging for me. And it’s not remote retrievable.

A huge mistake that people make is rejecting a technique that they haven't given a fair trial. . Experienced climbers can be the worst with new paradigms, they don't like feeling uncomfortable after years of being on top of their game. There's a few very experienced climbers who when I introduced them to the the Rope Wrench could not stand it and essentially rejected it on the spot ;-) It takes time and effort and a smidgeon of humility to absorb new technique or gear to know whether it's actually any good. Like said, I do honest appraisal, if it doesn't work the way I expect it to after a fair trial, into the dust bin it goes.

I'll post the retrievable functionality another time. It's worth noting though, at least for my climbing style, that I have no requirement for a cinched lanyard to be retrievable. If I want it retrievable I deploy it in DdRT mode. The advantage of a cinched lanyard it is can give you ultimate positioning while running saws or any task in a tree requiring strong positioning. Or it can be very handy/ergonomic when you're advancing and you don't want to fight a tree with "inconveniently placed" unions ;-) All of this is close to within arms reach stuff, at least for my climbing style. Remote release is a cool trick but not high on my short lanyard priority list.

Retrieval mode

So far I've got three different retrieval modes and a clean/quick to implement RADS/3:1 figured out on it. Also I'm much quicker/less fidgety installing the basic cinch mode now.

Goal is to reshoot the demo video to include the 3 retrievals and the RADS, and make it as short and to the point as possible. Poor Reedy, didn't mean to torture him with the meandering demo complete with MRS climbing, bird calls and deer tracks!

Can’t wait for you to get the ring stick in a union or partially stick to the point where it whips out and the ring breaks a front tooth.

Poor Andy, can’t ever handle my criticism. Good luck with your square wheel, buddy.
