Morbark Cyclone 8 inch chipper with a CAT engine.

I just posted this in another thread but if anybody has this chipper it would be great if I could get some pictures of the wiring to the starter. I had a wire terminal break off from somewhere and have been having issues since. I put it back where it seemed to go as well as where the chipper would start. The wiring seems to be a little nontraditional as well, maybe having something to do with the giant battery and the fact that the disc belt is always engaged (no tension-er or clutch.) I have not yet talked to Morbark or Caterpillar. Will do that on Monday. Any help would be appreciated. You can see in the picture the loose wire and the nut on the starter solenoid that is backed off. I am beginning to think I may have bypassed the solenoid, which is why it was still working, but now may have cooked out the starter. (I am a really bad mechanic and maybe calling things by the wrong name) Sorry for the sideways picture

ok thats what i decided earlier. I ran it for a day with it on the stud running to the starter motor. it seemed like there was a gap on that stud so i was just bypassing the solenoid (i also had someone telling me thats where it went) and it ran so we went with it. I switched it back so it was with the other red wires and now when I turn the key it just clicks once. Do you think running it for that long bypassing the solenoid would burn the starter up?
 
If you had the red wire on the stud with the gap you say, that's the ground stud for the solenoid which grounds to the case of the starter. You definitely could have burned up the motor, especially if its only clicking now. With your ignition switch on , you should be able to jump those two studs, which would crank the engine, if it just clicks...well you might need a new starter.

No, running it on the wrong side of the starter meant whatever the other solenoid in the pic is wasn't connected to the battery and not getting power unless you were cranking the engine.

That's assuming that power wire runs up to the other solenoid in the pic

That is not a ground stud, the case grounds the starter. The wire coming out of the starter to the solenoid is were the positive voltage is applied.

If it just clicks you likely need to tighten and clean your solenoid and battery connections and charge your battery
 
Someone did some hack ass wiring on that thing too. Wire nut in there and four separate ground wires running from the block up and looks like they all go to the same place (I'm guessing gauges) means someone didn't know wtf they were doing.
 
Voltages everywhere checked out. Ordered another starter. Opened it up and it had 3 threaded studs instead of the two on the one I have. Took mine off and there was some solder on the backside of the solenoid with part of a wire terminal stuck in there and a shiny piece where it was recently broken. Mystery solved.
