Minimalist climbing

I'm not a hunter, so I don't know what a practical height limit is for a particular prey, but you will want a sufficient limb above the spot you intend to perch at. If your perch is at 20' but the next limb up is 12' higher, you'll need 64' of rope plus extra feet for knots, etc.

A lot of ropes can be bought by the foot or in standard lengths of 150'/200'/300' (sometimes 120'). Might be better off with 150' and after a few climbs, you could cut it into two pieces - a short and long - to match the trees you would use.

@BrandonAllgood If you play around on eBay, look up a company called Casto Trading Company or Casto Bargains. They get hanks from several name brand companies and you can get 60-80 ft lengths of many great line for 60% of normal price. They're 100% legit and knowledgable. They have Teufelberger, Yale, etc.

For 20-30 ft (30 is high for hunting around here not to mention the ballistics change), its hard to beat simplicity and comfort of Ddrt on a 1/2" line, leather cambium saver optional. I have an 80 ft hank of Teufelberger Safety Blue that gets used an awful lot for low work stuff. Splice an eye on one end. Cheap.

Hip thrust since you're only going up once or twice that day. Pick your poison on how to set that up. A short loop of cord girthed to sadlle connection works well for extension for thrusting. Or just buy a foot ascender.

A decent hitch cord carabiners and hitchclimber pulley. They weigh almost nothing relative to rifle, ammo and boots. Leave system on rope and just pull climb line eye over TIP each time.

Light weight unbusy saddle of some sort. You'll be set for a long time.

Anything less may be more minimalist, but you may be cussing trying to get up that tree at 4:30 am. ;)

As far as SRT vs DRT. I don't know, Srt just seems like overkill. On canopy tie, it forces you to place throwline legs on same exact path, maybe in low light. One little branch between the two legs and you might not be able to set your anchor - or you may think it's set until you take a little drop on the way up - now it's set - and you're definitely awake! If you do use canopy tie, use with quick link. Don't try to fish all that throwline through the butterfly in the dark, lol. Base tie? Doubled force on TIP, unknown tree, low light - seems risky. Hand and foot ascender seems to make sense.

Good luck with it.
