Woke up this morning and looked out the window to see the intertwined tree branches against the brightening sky, and began to consider the marvel of trees. The Bible states that the tree were made to be pleasant to see, and good for a food source. In addition, trees sequester our very exhalation and produce that necessary ingredient to support life, turning that into their substance which can be used to make our homes, build ships, and musical instruments, or hunting implements. They also are used to keep our house warm, with their aromatic oils. Even the resulting ash has multiple uses. My father said that when he was a youth he would chew on the dried sap of the spruce as a sort of gum. I have made tea from the root of the sassafras. The sap produces things like rubber, turpentine, and syrup. Trees of course provide many with their livelihood or recreation, giving us shade in the heat of the day and a sturdy support for a hammock to rest in. All the potential for this marvelous organism can be held in the palm of your hand. They produce scents and colors with each season, as their discarded leaves make the perfect mulch for future forests. What else am I overlooking?
