Officials said a man died Saturday afternoon in a tree trimming accident in central Phoenix.
The man, identified as 36-year-old Erasmo Corrales was killed while trimming a palm tree at a home near 26th Street and Thomas Road at about 1 p.m.
Phoenix Police Department Spokesman, Officer James Holmes, said Corrales had been cutting palm fronds from the tree when fronds collapsed on top of him. Holmes said it appears the weight of the fronds may have suffocated the victim and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Battalian Chief Jim Walter, a chain saw was also knocked out of his hands, cutting his leg.
Two other workers on the ground reportedly climbed the tree to help the man and when firefighters arrived, the three men were about 40 feet up in the tree.
Firefighters were able to get the two men down, but by the time they could get to Corrales, he had died, according to Walter.
The other two workers were not injured.
