Officials said a man died Saturday afternoon in a tree trimming accident in central Phoenix.

The man, identified as 36-year-old Erasmo Corrales was killed while trimming a palm tree at a home near 26th Street and Thomas Road at about 1 p.m.

Phoenix Police Department Spokesman, Officer James Holmes, said Corrales had been cutting palm fronds from the tree when fronds collapsed on top of him. Holmes said it appears the weight of the fronds may have suffocated the victim and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Battalian Chief Jim Walter, a chain saw was also knocked out of his hands, cutting his leg.

Two other workers on the ground reportedly climbed the tree to help the man and when firefighters arrived, the three men were about 40 feet up in the tree.

Firefighters were able to get the two men down, but by the time they could get to Corrales, he had died, according to Walter.

The other two workers were not injured.

This has to stop , seeing and hearing about all these accident is a shame ...

I have been working w/a local tree services around town that have Hispanic workers and trying to teach them on the danger of this problem, some listen and others tell me that it wont happen to them, and I hope not..

At work next month we are doing a palm tree rescue and I will post some pics...

Prayers go out to Mr Corrales family members ..

Later in SO-CAL

I was just about to post this. Unbelievable this is still happening. I work in this area regularly. Makes me want to post a warning sign on all palms with skirts. An unneccessary death and sad story.

I think most of these accidents occur not from tree service employees, but rather guys knocking on doors for palm or other tree work. I also think the homeowner is partially responsible if they knowingly hired an uninsured or undocumented worker.
