Making the switch...

looking to make the leep from a blakes hitch to the Schwabish. i havnt been climbing long and like the blakes but i feel just as comfortable if not more with the schwabish, distel and Vt. seems more secure having both ends of my split-tail tied in to the saddle. I have been doing the low and slow thing with the scwabish and i think im ready to put it into service, although i have one question. after i tie the schwabish, how long should the two ends be? or is it personal preference. thanks

I think its personal preference, I climbed with them each about foot long then when I went to running a hitchclimber i have them very short where the VT makes its last cross is where the eye's are.

Schwabish and distel are good ones to start with, they seem to grab a little better without having to worry about setting it after an ascent. 28"-32" is a common range for the total length of an eye & eye prusick, but it really comes down to personal preference. Good luck, I bet you never look back to the blake's.

Bye bye Blake's! You'll never look back. Although, practice tying it now and again to stay fresh...It's still so useful. I know my hitch cord is going to fumble out of my hands one of these days while switching from footlock to DdRT in the tree, so it is nice to have the blake's with the tail of my climbing line as a backup.

I've learned with any of the i2i hitches to compulsively check and make sure they are dressed and set throughout the whole time I'm climbing. They behave so differently as hitches compared to the blake's. I try to make checking them second nature, like keeping my balance.

My tuppence. Climb safe.
