Major difference between Red and White Oak

Super cool treezy! White oak is king for ship building and I've heard it many times. It's so much harder and denser than the reds. Of interest, Quercus virginiana - live oak (which some say is in a family all its own - but more like white oak to me) was used because of its curvy nature to build arched pieces. It also handles the wet weather sea environment very well. If you look at any green weight log chart you'll see it's the heaviest we have. I have been told that Quercus michauxii - swamp chestnut oak (white oak family) - doesn't have as good characteristics as Quercus alba, which is supposed to be our best all weather wood for ship building.
