Lost 20\' of a hank of Polydyne

We accidentally cut 20' off one end of our 150' hank of 5/8" polydyne the other day. After lowering a large top to the ground a bite of the rigging line got caught under part of the log and without knowing the groundsman bucked right through the line. SO now to the splicing question, I want to make a fixed eye sling for hanging a porty, I followed Samson's double braid class I instructions for used rope and it seemed way too easy. I wish I had tapered the core tail instead of cutting it close at mark x. The line has been used for 4 large removals (although we never maxed it's WLL) but it it's used nonetheless. Is polydyne a good option for a sling? Should I have used new rope procedures for splicing the eye? Is this an easy splice regardless? I couldn't find any specific info on Yale's site. Any suggestions/ help is appreciated.

I will follow the used line instructions when the line is worn in, but I always add three or four inches of crossover (Instead of the close cut at x) that little core-less spot at the base of the burry creeps me out

1. Polydyne is an excellent choice for catching wood. The nylon core will help absorb the shock.

2. As long as you spliced it according to the directions, you're golden.

3. Yes, Yale ropes are easily spliced.

Did you stitch it?

1. I thought so

2. I followed instructions for used rope but it felt too easy compared to other double braids.

3. It was easy but felt too easy and now where the end of the core tail and throat of splice are is a little hollow spot.

Whiplock!

Re: Lost 20\' of a hank of Polydyne

One quick question for ya. You said you wished you tapered the core tail instead of just cutting it at mark x. Does this mean you didn't taper the final core tail bury, so instead of a smooth taper, you have a lump or bump of sorts, where you can tell where the final core is buried?

Re: Lost 20\' of a hank of Polydyne

I've found that large bull ropes splice ridiculously easy compared to any of the double braid climbing lines. Easy enough that I was pleasantly surprised.

Re: Lost 20\' of a hank of Polydyne

on my second go around I sent the core tail 4" past the troat for a crossover and I feel much better about it, bull rope is much easier to splice than the tighter climb lines of similar construction.
