Lockjack mods?

Yo echo I breezed over this thread and noticed your boy is climbing on Blake's . Try him on hitch climber with a vt , xt , or michcaon, coopers . He will do good with a short bridge on that id bet. my 7 year old boy does better with a setup like that verse Blake's right now.
We've tried the hitch climber, and other pulleys. We've used deisel, michcaon, swaybage and VT. He still has trouble descending. The vt doesn't like to grab for him while he is climbing.

Hmm maybe shorten it up or throw extra wrap(s) . I guess that can make ascent a bit tougher for the kids. Xt? Don't wanna derail too much from lockjack mods thread :) we could p.m. or start a kids climbing setups thread!

Tuttle I use a hitch climber myself and live it but it hasn't proven worthy much for him.
I don't even own a lock jack yet but I am interested in one for him. Keeping him low and slow is hard to do know what I mean? Lol. I have to manage his rope and tip height.

Wait.......ones I looked at last night costed a bunch of quarters lol.
What size is that tether and what is the length.
I still like my hitch climber setup. I'll still using it for some years to come.

Tether is approx 5", liking your hitchclimber is one thing, but believe me, I have been in this game for years using every single tool on the market, and lockjack saves you so much bother.
I see a lot of things I like about the lockjack. There's no disadvantage I can see. Well other than it has to be threaded and can't be installed mid line.
I've been looking a morning at lockjacks to get my son. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger.

I used the lockjock for the first time yesterday, it's works perfectly for the pinto to act as the fairlead.
Still self tends, but does encounter some resistance from the pinto, but it did not effect the speed of the climb.
I also used a cocoon for the first time on the same job, it runs much better than a pinto in a pulley saver setup.

I still haven't caught up with the end of this thread, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned. I think it is the Spiderjack that is not midline attachable. As has already been mentioned, I believe the lockjack is midline attachable.

I have neither owned nor used either device, but my impression from what I've read in the forums is that the Spiderjack might be a lot more sensitive than the Lockjack. The Spiderjack also seems more inherently dangerous than the Lockjack, because of the fact that it is possible to go into a free fall if the top paddle on the Spiderjack gets pushed down unexpectedly.

My impression is that the Lockjack is safer because of fact that the release sits underneath the device, and is therefore less likely to be engaged accidentally.

The folks on this forum with actual experience with these devices can feel free to correct any wrong impressions I might have. Thanks in advance.

Tim

Yep your points are correct, I have had all 3 art devices, my preference is the lockjack on taller trees, my postioner on most 15ft to 30ft, which is on a 20ft lanyard, for take downs, so I don't need the full length of rope etc, I abseil off the spike with a fig 8 descender for the final fell.

I do love my lockjack, it is so much easier than prusik work.

Tim you are right. I don't know how I missed that. For the life of me I thought the LockJack had to be threaded or modded to me mid mounted. I never bought my son one. Reckon I don't have an excuse now.
