Lightning Protection?

The BIG RED OAK thread is getting onto the topic of lightning protection. So instead of derailing it....lets talk about it here.

Who's doing what? And wasn't there a big symposium on the topic in Florida? What was the concensus?

Christian and I made the trip from Ontario to Florida for that symposium, I think the concensus was that it is still under investigation. It seems that a lot is being put into research and many scientist have been involved but 'time will tell', was the most popular amoung answers to many questions. Bartlett Research lab is currently installing lightning protection all over the states and seemed to be quite confident in their application. It is certainly an interesting topic. What a great idea! What have we heard out there?

Down here in the south we have almost daily lightning strikes and they always hit houses, trees, or even people who stay outside too long or just get unlikely. We install about 100 systems per year and repair at least that many if not more. Our office is part of the Bartlett family and we truely believe in the lightning protection system and the old system works just fine according to our lab and yes you do need to update it so it doesnt get swallowed by the trees or gets the cable cut near the ground either. Its a great add on service and a great money maker for not just only our office but other companies throughout the country.
